It was destiny, fate. I would have found BZFlag if I had searched for anything from Cucumber Sandwiches to The Wizard of Oz.

I was searching for some database utilities on sourceforge.net for a consulting client I was working with. I can't remember how I ended up getting from there to the BZflag summary, like CBG said, perhaps a karma thing.

I used to play the original Battle Zone back in the late 70s/early 80s, so it caught my eye right away. I was a tanker in the Army briefly in the early 80s (on M-60A5s, and through the first M-1 transitions) before my military career went in a different direction. Consequently, the tank motif also piqued my curiosity.

in 1997 I was asked by my roommate to help finish the windows version and get it playing nicely with windows NT and 95. At the time CRS was looking to put bzflag out as a commercial release.

I was searching on Sourceforge for good open source games. BZFlag is by far the best I have come across.

I've also played Freeciv, if anyone else has tried that.

Was looking around on Game Hippo 4 or 5 years ago for first person shooter games and saw it.
It was rated by other players pretty high so I downloaded it.
Took me a while to get it working correctly but .........
