Poptart, you might check out the posts in the Help boards, such as the Tactics and Playstyles board.

yes, the board here will have *alot* of info - just look around.

Another thing to consider, is get yourself a pizza (or whatever) and join a popular server as an observer. I don't know the commands available to an observer off the top of my head - but get to know those as well. You can switch between observing any of the other players, either drive with them, follow behind them or even not observe anybody at all and just "fly" around the playing field or map.

But my advise would be to drive with the players with the higher/est scores and watch their playing style and tactics.

Good luck
Steve

Yeah, damn, I'm with Lego on this one, I can't seem to figure it out!

Oh wait.. I made it. If you want some "help", don't rip off other peoples creations.

You have got to admit, Macs are awesome. (my opinion.)

Yeah, observer mode helps a lot. It defaults to follow the player with the most points (I think), and that's the setting you probably want.

A quick rundown of the observer controls (off the top of my head):

F8: switch camera mode
in roaming mode:

Arrow keys: Pan camera
Shift+arrows: move camera up and down
Ctrl+arrows: Angle camera

Hope that helps.

to add a little more to that: F6 and F7 switch throuh players

Can you say that in a way that doesn't make other mac users ashamed?
Also, there was no need to post twice in a row. Use the Edit button...

I smell an OS War brewing, lock the topic quick!
(And I must agree with CannonBallGuy)

How is that an OS war? CBG asked him to rephrase, just in different terms.

One, I am new here,
Two I can't delete one of my posts,
Three, I'm not trying to start an OS war...
But you have to admit, Macs are pretty cool. Mabey a little expensive, but still worth that extra cash.

How do the ranking systems work anyway? What stats do you need to move up a rank?

1. Read the FAQ.
2.No, but you can edit it instead of making a new post.
3.Nobody said you were.

There will be no admitting anything ever here on BZBB. Rankings are custom given, generally by the 'what have you done for the community' scale.

Never worry Poptart... anyone who uses leet speak to call someone else lame.... well, let's just say: consider the source. Honestly though, your request is asking people to share strategies and that sort of thing that makes them great. Most players here have only their bzflag identity to measure their self worth and little else. As such, those who have little can only spare a little to give away. I think the very best way you can become very good at bzflag is to:

-+ play a lot, play a lot, play a lot
-+ watch what others do (duplicate the good, erase the bad!)
-+ keep away from idiots (cheaters, crackers, harrassers, trolls and emo boys)
-+ pick a particular server you enjoy and spend the majority of your time there
-+ if it's a flag server, use flags to your advantage and never miss an opportunity to pick them up (though I personally disdain flags when playing)
-+ if it's not a flag server, work on your mobility and dexterity
-+ always remember that score never reveals how truly good a player is. There are many other roles besides shooters in this game (especially CTF ... otherwise it's slaughter time ;-) ): runners, shield/interferences, defenders, campers. It's too bad we dont have more developers and their time to set up measuring points for these valuable yet underappreciated roles.

I believe there's a zen to this game (as there is for any other community-based activity). All of the really good players (ducatiwannabe, /dev/explodingtank/, green manalishi, cosmo and many others) exhibit this. All of the idiots here unsurprisingly do not. Good luck in your bz exploits!

Poptart,

A good strategy in BZFlag is to...
1) Never keep a single strategy. Try to be unpredictable and unable to decipher.
2) Be observant of the radar and "out-the-window" at all times. This will help you spot tanks with flags such as cloaking, stealth, or masquerade.
3) When in doubt, DON'T FRANTICALLY JUMP. You have a much better chance if you actually run away instead of jumping. You cannot steer in the air, like in Mario games (without the Wings flag).
4) Stay out of open areas. Especially in maps with more teams (there are 4 teams in all). You will be more likely of being shot with a Laser or being double-teamed. Go after one opponent at a time.

I hope I've helped! Good luck with BZFlag.
