What is your key mapping / what is the best key mapping

I've been looking around about this for a while, and i've been trying to figure out what the best key mapping system is. For most of the time i've been playing, i used left/right mouse to shoot, middle mouse to restart/lock on/identify, and tab to jump, space bar to drop flags.

I recently discovered that if you use the config, you can set more then 2 keys to shoot, so ive been experimenting with q,w,e,r to shoot, right mouse to shoot also (sniping), left mouse to jump, and middle mouse same as before. Ive been finding, however, that my left fingers are jumpy and make me jump when i dont want to. Also, for some reason if my finger taps the mouse in mid jump, it will double jump me, which is awful for gu league, etc.

So, i pose the question: What is the best key mapping to use?

Just give your thoughts, how you have it, or whatever you want to say about it.

Fire -> s,d,f
Jump -> Space
Identify/Lock on -> a
Slow keyboard movement -> g
Drop flag -> Tab

This way I can drive with the arrow keys and do all the other important things with my left hand.

I like to use the mouse, so I have most of the important things mapped to it.
Left Mouse and J - Fire
Right Mouse - Identify/Lock On
Thumb Button 1 - Talk to Teammates
Thumb Button 2 - Jump
Scroll Forward - Binoculars
Scroll Back - Talk to Everyone
Click Scroll Button - Drop flag
Q,W,E - Radar, Message Box, Scores
1,2,3 - Radar Levels

That's about all I use frequently while playing.

Space --> Drop Flag
ArrowKeys -->Move/Pilot

This is my setup:

Code: Select all

Jump = '
Shoot = Enter & LMC
Move = Mouse
There :P

Actually though, I do have about 9 different shot keys, I've tried almost every possibility. I used to use "q,w and e" for servers where jumping isn't allowed - like Hepcat. I don't have very good coordination in all 3 fingers to produce consistent 3 shot sprays so I find that 2 shot buttons are best. This way you can easily have up to 5+ Shot sprays of all equal distance. Making them almost impossible to dodge :twisted: Just by simply alternating between each press :) I use this style on ALL servers.

My 2nd main problem (main one being the double jumping), is that i frequently turn the scoreboard/console on and off, to check flags, kills, etc, and with the new setup i have now my fingers jump all over the place and i can't remember which ones are for which keys, and i end up turning off my radar, and once that happens i'm dead. My shooting keys atm being q,w, and e i am still experimenting with toggling buttons.

Would changing jump from the mouse button down to up make any difference with double jumps?

Here is my mapping, sorry I can't help you with your mouse issues, as you can see below. Once you get used to a good setup, hitting the wrong keys becomes less of a problem. I think a better default key-mapping would be a important addition to 2.2

fire: z,x
dropflag: c
binoculars: a
jump: space
identify: <tab>
slowmo: q
show score, chat, radar are the default:s, w, r

Drive: arrows
paper weight: mouse

When I'm on sniping maps like Tavern, I keep my fingers on a and z to switch between binoculars and fire. Most other places, I keep them on z and x.

azerty keyboard:

q (the close zoom to pass flags)
a z e r for normal zooms
right and left mouse button to shoot (sux somethimes for good triples, but for doubles great)
tab for jumping
f is lock on
i is spawn

I use a joystick...

Button 1 is the trigger, button 2 is a secondary trigger where you keep your thumb, button 3 is on the top, on the left and forward, button 4 is in front of button 3, buttons 5 and 6 are to the right of 3 and 4.

1 is obviously fire.
2 is Identify/Lock/Spawn
3 is Jump
4 is Drop Flag
5 is Binocs

Isn't that the default settings?

I think that's the point. Default settings work well for most players, although they may not know any better. ;)

I only just realized I could get a slight edge (Not that it stops me coming last) by configuring my keys, I agree with donny though, they work well for most players, I now have:

Shoot=q+e
Jump=Tab
Spawn=w
Radar Toggle=a
Chat Toggle=d
Score Toggle=s
Binoculars=b
Drop Flag=Space

does that work well for you, or are you just experimenting for now?

i've seen weirder controls though. wasn't it saturos who used a wii-mote in bz once?

Mostly default settings, except for.

J - Jump

Whatever was at J before (flag hiding?) - Tab

This works really well for me, since I can have my index finger on Enter to fire, my pinky on J to jump, and my ring finger on I to respawn (but I'm getting better). I can cross my thumb over to space to drop my flag, and my chat keys are right below my hand. Also, since O is right next to I, abusing lagstats is right there...

I do have a gamepad, so I should try that soon.

I can see why you are using thos ekeys, they all kinda fit in the reach of your left hand...
But, rather, try using something like
F - shoot
D - jump
S - identify/spawn
A - lagstats
Keep 1 - 5 for radar.
IIRC, Q, W and E are kinda important too. Space can drop your flag.

Don't you find that a little easier than stretching for keys that are more spread out..? :)

After much experimentation I have found that mouse works for movement and shooting, tab is good for jumping and space to drop flag.

However, I find it more and more useful to boost up your radar than to configure complex key combinations. I have '1' to set the radar range to .07, 2 to .5 and 3 to 1. I have the radar to maximum size possible with full opacity and a medium sized mousebox set to size 1. I have lined radar shots set to '50' with leading shots.

This works exceedingly well for me.

Try setting scroll wheel down and left click as fire shot. this way you can get perfect spreads when you need or single shots. it helped me a ton when i did it.

Shoot: left click
bursts: Scroll down
Jump: w
lock on: right click
drop flag: c

Gah, it's been 6 months and my key mapping is just about the same! (Sorry CBG).

Strangely, my hand fits naturally in that position now. For right now (experimenting), I moved the radar keys to 8, 9, and 0 (adjust radar by shift-scrolling), un-mapped a bunch of useless keys (like flag help (wimps), hunt/change, autopilot, and silence) that get in the way, and changed GUI settings around a little to accomodate. Now I just need to ditch that sucky Mighty Mouse...
