3 or 4 years ago? It has been around much more recently than that. AFAIK, it was the server run on the same server as these forums, and leeched too much bandwidth. Don't hold me to that though.A Vicious Muffin wrote:I remember this server from 3 or 4 years ago.
The map was Spiralzone by Wiz - a souped up version of Spirals by BZDoug.
The server it'self was called "Secretplace" and was very popular at one point. Since the release of 2.0, it declined in popularity.
There is a version of the map at bzflag.eu:5151

I have been contemplating for some time bringing up a server and hosting a number of legacy maps on it that were wildly popular in their time. Specifically, SpiralZone and SecretPlace, among a few others. I am curious what other maps have come and gone that might be candidates. And I'm not looking for individual favorites as much as the ones that had long term popularity--essentially BZ institutions--like Boxy, Badger, MOFO, and Two Castles are today. Any thoughts on what those maps might be, and how to contact their authors?

SpiralZone is the map, the server was commonly called Secretplace.
I didn't know it was taken down, I thought that it just lost popularity to the other FFA maps...in the cruel cycle of popularity that is BZ.
Now, I think that Viper's Two Castles is the longest-running map with actually decent player counts. That's been up as long as I can remember, but that doesnt really matter.

aribeth's giza plateau (one of the coolest maps ever) is hosted by norang. bzflag2.norang.ca:4417. then there was ziggy's (iggy's?) world which was semi-popular in it's time. it would be interesting to see it back online too. then there was the atlantis map. a 2.x version of that map would be da bomb, but it never happened. there could have been other sleepycows maps but i remember these three only.
spiralzone
Spiralzone is up and running. It now has the same bandwith as before, so it should be able to handle plenty of players. Mindbender was gracious enough to supply it for us for the time being.
Come play and just have fun. Please please remember we try to keep it a family server. Which means no swearing. Spirals was known for its fierce battles and fun play so come and help us bring it back.
