Bzflag Updater Talk

Post by Gamma Ray »

Is it possible to have a BZFlag updater? Also where would menu options for it go?
Would the Sparkle framework (http://sparkle.andymatuschak.org/) work with the Mac version of BZFlag?

At least could there be an updater page:
http://update.bzflag.org/ for all updating procedures. This could then be used to host update pages for Sparkle framework or similar updating methods.

Edit: Sparkle framework (being Cocoa) may not be compatible.

In the meantime what else can be used in general to improve the updating process for BZFlag?

Sparkle might not work for BZFlag since the game is not a Cocoa application.

I'm a Mac dev, and would be more then happy to make a Mac BZFlag helper app. (If theres enough interest) It would be a cocoa app that would contain the BZFlag.app inside it. Then to open BZFlag you would open this app and it would then check for updates. If there are none, it would launch BZFlag and quit itself. It wouldn't even need a GUI. (I don't know if anyone plays StarCraft 2, but it would be something like it's update system.)

It could also be the other way round, however I think it would be harder to accomplish. i.e. BZFlag.app has an updater app inside it.

p.s.
Love the new website...

BZFlag 2.4.2 will, in all likelihood, be the last release of BZFlag, so there isn't much point to adding an updater now.

Sad, but I figured that might be the response.

If BZFlag was in the Mac App store, it would do the auto updating.

So get Mac, it's good.

For the record, I hate the Mac App Store.
