Help With Map Making

Post by Ice Wewe »

Hey all,

Well call me a n00b to map making, but I am determined! But honestly I have a question. Where do I get BzEdit 2.0, and has anyone gotten theirs to work on linux??? I downloaded BzEdit 1.6.2 (avalible from SF) and it works great, but isn' there some issue with 1.6 is way old? Anyway here it is, and feel free to curse me for making it so difficult to put into 2.0!!! 8) Anyway, I would ask that you email me with suggestions (canada3332@yahoo.com), and please feel free to edit my map, but please ask me :( and email me with the new version, you are free to use it as you please, just as long as I get one tiny spec of credit, and of course a copy  .

There is no BZEdit 2.0 :] All coding in 2.0 is done by hand in Notepad or some other text editor.

there is no bzedit 2.0 in the near future...your gonna have to use
mostly notepad to make your maps for 2.0 as if you open them
with bzedit 1.6 it will delete all the new features..... so do
most of your layout of boxes and pyrs and teles...then do everything
else with notepad...

there is a program called blender ask jeff2501 or trepan
about it...and you could use thier convertor to pull
some stuff over to your map...

we do have a small group of tinkerers here but were using
notepad for the moment...

you can also use bzedit to make box and pyramids,
and then swap them out for groups. the trees and
lousy rocks map was made in a similar fashion. boxes
and pyramids were generated using bzmapper, and
then the following textual substitutions were made:

box -> group rock
pyramid -> group tree

I dug through a few forums to bring this very old quote of Jeff's (he was PatLabor221 at the time) I was also trying to get BZEdit working on Linux:
JeffM2501 wrote:you'll have to find out how to get it for what ever brand of *nix you use. I'll probably be part of a GTK package. Best of luck, I have yet to see anyone except the origonal author get linux BZ edit to build.
My dad and I spent much much much time trying to compile this stupid thing. And Jeff, sorry to say, it never happened.... Wait a minute! Are you "the original auther of linux BZ edit"? :?
I am gonna try again someday. When I get back to Costa Rica.

Version 2.0 nearly done, will be a LOT different from 1.0. Has a lot of improvements, but I think there will be a *few* bug(s). Such as, there are boxes at 0,0 that I can't seem to locate (in the boxes menu) and delete, suggestions? 2.0 will be ready by 10 Pm EST, or tomorrow afternoon, depending on how much I add :D!

My first ever map, revised, to be, Version 2.0 (so alpha). Same text as the first time around, so let me repeat the jist of what I said it goes like this: "Blah, blah ,blah ,blah. Blah, blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah, blah, credit me, blah, blah, blah. Send me a copy." Ok, so here is 2.0 (with over 3x the data, I think *scratches head*)...

Hey why can't I attach???!!! :| Wierd, oh well, I guess you'll have to wait until morning...

Now all I need to do, is figure out a way to load my map into Bzflag (wether it be 1.10.x or 2.0) and test it for bugs!!! Can stupid me get any help there?

you start a normal server with your map
dont use the public switch or anything that
would put it on the list server....

then you start bzflag.exe put in your name/pw
then for server put 127.0.0.1 port 5154...

it will be a private thing then you can review
your map mistakes and correct them before
releaseing the map...

oh give your map a real name its easier
to find with a name and too many use "test"
"first" for names...

i see whats wrong you have about 40 10x10x10 boxes
all in the same spot...your gonna have to go in and
delete all of them to free up that tele...

thats why it looked like you could not delete the box
there is more then 1...

Can you give me a quote on how to do that? I don't really know how to work bzfs (is it included in the CVS?). Anyway I fixed it :), or so I think, I went into WordPad (actually Gedit) and deleted all the pyrmids and boxes at 0,0,0 with a size of either 10,10,10 or 1,1,1. It was quite easy, and I had a lot. So could you give me a copy and paste out of a terminal, or describe what to do? Also, how do I convert the map to a ".bzw"?? Is it hard to code into 2.0?

to convert to bzw is really easy just rename the *.map
to *.bzw...tada! it will run a *.map file though it
just complains while it does it...:)

as to runnning a server goto bzflag.org goto the wiki(read it all)
or go over to sleepycows.org and read their stuff...

Yep, I made one, its called BzEdit1.6.2! Its just like the 2.0 version, all you have to do is put on your magic 2.0 glasses ($49.99 US  ) and you see *presto*, BZEdit 2.0! Ok, well I fixed my problems, but now have to wrestle with my BZFS conf file, arg! Its so hard, in BZEdit 2.0.1 I want them/me to make a auto config GUI thing, so you just check off what you want and it goes an updates the bzfs.conf file!!! :lol-old:

It does work as opposed to 1.10.8. It does a great job of making your config file too. I use it.

Major Map

Post by Ice Wewe »

Ok, here is a beta, yes a BETA of my map. You are free to host it, it is meant to be 5 rogue, 4 red, 4 green, 4 blue, 4 purple, and 4 observers. Yes, there are some teleporter problems. But after spending over 2 hours working on it today, I am ready to hit the bed! Anyway here it is. There is a flag hiding place behind each base, drive through, non-shoot through walls protecting it from bae campers, and other nice features. Meant to be a Easy/Meduim level of difficulty map. Will have more enhancements/improvements made in the near future. You are allowed to host it with the server des. "Ice Wewe's World,4 team CTF. Hosted by: Your name here" Enjoy!
