Re: Setting up the server to the public

Well. I did some final tweaks. Got the time thing to auto start fixed, gravity, wing flaps, shots etc set.
I added the:
-public "blah blah" and
-publicaddr 67.10.210.195:5123
but it crashes my bzfs
I even tried adding them to a seperate config.txt and pointed to that in the shortcut but same thing :(

Any ideas?

Setting up the server for public

Post by LouMan »

Attach your .conf file text so that I can take a look at it. Also, what exactly happens when your server crashes? Are you behind a firewall? Also, you may want to try adding the '-p 5123' option to the .conf file.

This is an example of one of my .conf files:

#Public network address for the server
-publicaddr louman.homelinux.net:5150

-p 5150

#Public description for the server
-public "Time Trial by LouMan - Dramamine is advised!"

#Server Message displayed when player joins
-srvmsg " "
-srvmsg "************************************************************"
-srvmsg "* *"
-srvmsg "* Welcome! This server does not utilize filtering for foul *"
-srvmsg "* language due to lag issues, but is monitored. Players *"
-srvmsg "* that repeatedly use foul language or generally offensive *"
-srvmsg "* chat/callsigns will be banned. *"
-srvmsg "* *"
-srvmsg "* MAP HINT: You can jump 'through' the floors of most of *"
-srvmsg "* the buildings to reach higher elevations! *"
-srvmsg "* *"
-srvmsg "************************************************************"
-srvmsg " "

I decided to avoid completely hijacking this thread. I started a new one and just now posted the info you're asking... http://my.bzflag.org/bb/viewtopic.php?p=31032#31032

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

I've been looking through the TimeTrials in a notepad.... And I realize your building building kung fu is much greater than mine
I wish to make a very different map but I was hoping you would share how to make a simple building just like the ones you use. So it would be easier for me to then learn and start making various buildings of my own.
I wish to make a map of a downtown area

Or is it impractical for me to reverse engineer what your doing and should rather try to learn and utilize the software you mentioned earlier in this thread?

If your talking about learning how to make all those complex meshes... wish a year of your life away. Use programs :), they work great. I made a map that's supposed to be of the outskirts of a city, however I never really got to finishing it. Here is a screenshot of the 1.0 version of the map: http://www.garrettsites.net/index.php?nav=life&page=11 . The one I attached is the 2.0 version- it's alot cooler! Don't let the 1.0 SS turn you down!

(for some reason the SQL on my site is loading very slowly today)

The more I look at this the more I think it's a larger time investment than I can afford. I would like to have made a downtown area, skyscrapers all around and in the middle a city park with tree's and benches.
I'll just leave the idea here and maybe somebody will like it enough to try.

I like "urban" or maps of real-life places. I tried to make one of those, with streets and skyscrapers, but all those textures overwhelmed me and I stopped after I laid the sidewalks. All it is is a few sidewalks. Maybe Louman, since you make great 2.0 maps, you'd give it a shot?

I thought about such a map, and saw that "Urban Jungle" was done successfully by Army of One. His map is a good one, and I don't want to be a copycat

BTW, I have released one more map, a red vs blue CTF named "Bridges" now being served on louman.homelinux.net:5154. This one took a lot out of me and I'll be taking a break from map making for a while so that I can play a little more

Thanks for hosting my map spldart, looks good :)
