Flags and Positions

Post by Wreckage »

Howdy.

I run private servers at home occasionally to play with family. I save the .bzw while connected to a server with a map i like and then use bzfs (or more recently StartBZFS) to start the server, no problems. But I don't understand how flags are positioned. I want to have the same flags appear as on the server but I don't know how to mimic it with the same positions etc. For example I want the same L flags on the bases in the two tanks, etc. I tried searching about this but no luck.

Thanks!

from #bzflag IRC at freenode.org:

22:28 -!- Wr3ckage [n=chatzill@mail.freegroups.net] has joined #bzflag
22:29 < Wr3ckage> quick question
22:29 < Wr3ckage> any way to copy flag positions etc. from a server to use on private one?
22:31 -!- Wr3ckage [n=chatzill@mail.freegroups.net] has quit [Client Quit]
23:01 < Supertanker> Two and a half minutes.
23:02 < Supertanker> Aren't flag positions generated randomy, out of curiosity?
23:02 < Supertanker> Been awhile since I've diddled with anything BZFlag related.
23:02 <+trepan> zones can constrain flag locations
23:02 <+trepan> and plugins can set them as well
23:02 < Supertanker> Ah, okay.
23:03 <@JeffM> its all not part of the map that's sent
23:03 < Supertanker> Flags are generated server-side, then?
23:03 <@JeffM> yes
23:03 <@JeffM> they may get input data from the map file
23:03 < Supertanker> Heh, I just realized how stupid client-side flags would be when I thought about that
23:03 <@JeffM> but what the client can save of the map is not always exactly what was in the map file
23:04 <@JeffM> 2.0.x actualy does some of the flag logic on the client, like pickups
23:05 < Supertanker> Makes sense
23:05 <+trepan> the flag options still aren't saved accurately, iirc
23:05 <+trepan> best to get the original file ;)
23:05 <@JeffM> indeed
23:07 < Supertanker> I remember the lovely days of the 1.x mapping format.
23:07 < Supertanker> Then came 2.x, and I thought it was too hard and I quit mapping.
23:07 < Supertanker> Typical...
