Water off the sides looks ugly

Post by cepris »

Hi,
I recently added water to my map and removed the ground. When I look over the wall of my map (which will be deleted), it looks very ugly, as if the image was being repeated. How can I fix this? Thanks.

I know two variants:

-- set large world size (2 000 or 20 000), keep ground and set ground material the same as your water texture. Maybe with worldsize 20 000 you don't need ground, so just set worldsize 20 000.

-- Add SkyDome (a huge sphere with sky texture embracing your map).

Also look how other maps are made, such as "Shoot the Winged Down" or "The Battle of Midway Island".

There's also the ability to add a sky box using specially named materials. This may or may not be what you'd want.

Could I add fog? Would that work?

Skybox gives me headache... I haven't seen anyone dare to do skybox or skydome with a definite-size unrepeated image to precision (I haven't been looking either).
About fog, I would never count on someone having the effect setting on. Some people just don't feel the need to blind themselves. You can't fog just the ground either.
Another option is to cover the water with a passable texture, a tiny bit above it. Then you'd be able to apply your own flowing effect too.

Japanese Castles used a skydome/box/thing.
