Does this map have too much detail

This map has very fine detail (I think I might of overdone it a little). I'm seeing how much detaill I can make a city with.

You can never have to much detail , I like the pop bottles (or are they fluides for your tank ) it looks really nice so far, good work.

Wow, that's an amazing map, considering it's made entirely out of primitive objects. Did you make it entirely in a text editor? That takes me back to the good ol' days ;)

Only thing i'd be worried about is the frame rate. The more objects you have, the more polygons there are to draw, so players on older or less capable computers can't handle it.

nice one, tanx!

Spazz, does BZFlag draw only visible polygons, or all of them?

NICE! There is a map of a whole city out there somewhere, on the same server as Missile War.

The main limits are polygons for drawing - the question above matters a lot and images which means a raster (png, jpeg opposed to vector like polygons, svg) are slow on slow connections the first time.

Is it OveRdOse (or something like that) by teamvss? It's hosted on a zaphod server.

Louman's Metropolis?

In terms of drawn polygons, I'm fairly sure BZFlag draws everything within the field of view - so even if the object is behind another, and therefore out of sight, it is still drawn. You can increase framerate quite considerably by using tricks like making unseen faces (like ones touching the ground) invisible, and setting up material's settings correctly.

You can also use methods like Drawinfo and LOD to speed up rendering.

I also know from experiments Optic Delusion has done that many smaller faces are better than one huge one. And in many cases, it's better to triangulate a complicated polygon, than give it loads of vertices.

Yes it is being done with only a text editor.
The supermarket (well that's in another league compared with the bottles  )
I'll let you see it as soon as I'm done (most likely by tomorrow I'll be done with it)

(The name for the map describes it very WELL)

I now think there is such a thing as too much detail because when I tried to load my map with the supermarket It couldn't load it after 3 minutes

ok I was able to take some screenshots (one of my computers couldn't handle it as shown by the screenshots )

I don't think the screenshots can show it that well so I'll include the map file with it.

***WARNING: IF YOU TRY TO START THE FILE AND DRIVE THROUGH THE MAP YOU DO SO AT YOUR GRAPHIC CARD'S RISK***

It CAN crash your computer or make it slow (as I found out :turtle: It's a good thing I have two computer's with bzflag )

Yes it is one of the two computers I use for bzflag. This is why there is a warning on my above post (for anyone who might NOT have a second computer to log in remotely and stop the process as I had to do).

That's probably only a problem on a Mac. On linux, you can use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a virtual terminal, and on Windows, you can press Ctrl+Shift+ESC to launch the task manager.

I use linux and tried it, but it was so slow it didn't even show that my other computer had joined until about 3 minutes later.

If BZFlag Crashes in fullscreen mode, hold Cmd-Alt-Esc for a few seconds, and it will be force-quit.

To stop a crashed BZFS process quit it in the Activity Monitor.
