Board upgrades

Post by JeffM »

We are changing the backend of the message board so somethings may be looking wierd to you, and some features may be disabled for a bit. We are aware of it and are working on it.

It'll take a little while to get used to, but I like the look.

I love the look! And it goes well with my new desktop manager/window manager in Linux. (XFCE)

Note, the actual URL for the board has changed.

It's now http://my.bzflag.org/bb

bzbb.bzflag.org will redirect to the new URL. This does mean that cookie for saving your automatic login info has changed as well. You will have to relog and make sure you chose "auto login".

This also means that any old links that had BZBB.BZFLAG.ORG will no longer work. AKA any bookmarks to any direct pages will not work.

Is there a particular reason why opening links in new window in the background (Ctrl+Shift+Click) will also open them in the same window as well? (Opera 7.6tp2, worked fine with previous board, works fine in all other boards).

I would also like to add that that happens in Mac's Safari also.

Yeah, I was also wondering about that (also on a Mac with Safari).

bookmarks won't work, because the only thing that is forwareded is the main page, not the sub pages the bookmarks link to. The page has to be forwared for the cookies to work.

The shift flick thing, I can't dupe. I'll try it on my mac later. I works fine in firefox. As far as I know that is a browser thing, not a HTML thing.

Please turn off the "Log me on automatically each visit:" check box which defaults to being checked on every time you try to log in. This is a security issue.

Thank you.

The entire internet is a security issue. It's on by convience, as you can't imagine how many people forget their usernames. after they make them.

Ah, a solid justification for adding to existing security problems.

Well, amazingly enough, it's not a convenience feature to have to uncheck it every time.

I walk up to public computers on campuses all the time and browse to mail.yahoo.com and enter someone's mailbox because of the same poorly chosen option defaults on Yahoo's systems. There are far more people that forget to uncheck that default on Yahoo's login screen than forget their account name.

Thanks - Not!

It's a UI issue more than anything else. Typically users who want it on only need to turn it on once (since it's automatic after that), while those who want it off have to turn it off repeatedly. Off is a far better default from that perspective than on.

I have to agree on that. I wouldn't want to or know how to chase after the cookie files that store my password. Though it probably wouldn't matter that much to me anyway.

Dealing with the technology aspect is simpler than dealing with the users. You can't imagine how many complaints I get each semester that someone hijacked their hotmail or yahoo account. That happens in computer classrooms, labs, libraries, and cyber cafes. And they're always upset and I have to deal with them in person or on the phone, not by impersonal email.
