Map Rotation Changeg for Silvercat

Silvercat has had the following map rotation on 5154 for some time:
  • Pillbox Original
    Babel
    Pillbox Traditional
    Overlord
We're trying out something new. We've taken the Pillbox Original (jumping pillbox) out and replaced it with the Wiki map. What is the Wiki map, you may ask? Well, you can see the map at http://elite.tybox.net/mapwiki.pl I can't really tell you what its like, because it may change between the time of this post and when you play. How you ask?

You'll notice at http://elite.tybox.net/mapwiki.pl that you can actually EDIT this map file. Currently ANY user can do this, and since all of Silvercat's players are honorable people, I trust that you will not do anything malicious to this mapfile. As long as it remains fun, we'll keep it up.

This is your opportunity to get your map on SilverCat! Or maybe make a tweak to the existing map that you think would be fun.

Try it out, and let me know what you think. Remember, this is on the honor system, please don't shatter my idealistic outlook.

So someone can totally copy-and-paste their map in? That is awesome! (I want to get my map in once :) ) Will this like reset every 72 hours or something?

Well, he did say you could put your own map on there... (but what's considered abuse?)

*edit*
I went to the URL silverfox gave and it says the server stopped responding... either your server is misconfigured or lots of people or editing it (which in effect, is a DoS - OK, maybe that's overboard...)

Anyone can edit, on the HONOR system? Are you mad? This is BZFlag; we deal with trolls and spammers and cheaters and tkers daily. This feature will not go unabused.

Although I do love the concept.

How long until we see a goatse map?

Abuse:

Abuse would be doing something that would deliberately break the server, or cause the map to not load. If you can load the map on your test server and play on it, then its acceptable.

Please no -admsg's, -public, or -port statements.

penguinix, you can do a goatse map if you want (icky)

Workaphobia, maybe I'm mad, maybe I believe that people are decent deep down. We'll see.

I'll simply take it down if its abused. I'm not gonna mess w/it much. Since the map is in a rotation (the best way for people to actually play it), it only plays once every 5 hours or so. The rotation is now:

Wiki Map
Babel
Pillbox Traditional
Overlord

If you see that someone has done something naughty when you load the file, just fix it. This is very much like a wiki, except I don't have revision control (which would be nice).

I do, however, have a log file that tracks changes.

I see that RPG took a look. No one has ventured to put in their own map yet though.

If this works well, I may put a .htaccess on there, and make the map run longer, but give access to the webpage only to those who ask for it.

i think this is one of the best ideas anyone has had for the game yet!
Great work SilverFox

Spazzy, that is a GREAT idea! The only problem is that:
1) My cable connection has already been proven "Bad for BZFS".
2) Linux isn't my default OS. And Windows hosting isn't an option.

If anyone wants to take up on this idea, I can have the Mapatorium export any of the "MOTD" data that you want.

If any BZ-fragger capable of hosting an server, I'd really love to see a "MOTD" server.

I'd certainly be willing to do this. :) But, I would need some help setting this up.

I modified the wiki. No problems yet. I can't wait to see my mods on Silvercat!

A suggestion for the current map: Whenever you discover what something is, add a comment to describe it. Almost every box should have a comment, then it is super-easy to modify it!

are we allowed to do -srvmsg?

No, please dont. There are only a few settings that are put in the conf file, that is one of them. Don't want it to be overriden, or distracted from.

Ever think about having somethign that automatically removes -admsg, -servmsg, or any other settings you don't want set?

That's exactly what I was thinking! (last night that is - pretty creepy  ) A little PHP could do this easily (although I don't know how).

So you don't know how to do it, but it would be easy?

Code: Select all

$badwords = array('-admsg', '-servmsg');
$wiki_map = str_replace($badwords, "#", $wiki_map);

I know string matches are easy in PHP, but as I know only so much I couldn't produce the example. :)

Can the wiki rotation be longer? I barely see it.

Can I change it to 2 caps or something in the wiki?

Yes, I've thought about a filter, but haven't had the time to work on it. I'm a hack so it'd take me hours w/out help.

We may make it longer, but need to have a way for players to shut down the map if they think it stinks. I'm thinking allowing users to do a /poll set _changeMap may do the trick.

Thanks for the php snippet, but the webpage is done in perl, and it'd be preferable to have a sub in the script that would parse and replace/remove certain strings.

Set variables are strange. They behave strangely, and are a hassle to register & set. If you want to do something like that, I suggest a plugin.
