Section 3: New Matching possibilities.

After readingAdmirarch's
good post, I of course wanted to add some to it as well.

To recap Admirarch:
Admirarch [edited for shortness] wrote: Proposition: There should be the option of playing matches which last for 15
minutes instead of the usual 30.

For:
Fewer matches will be called of because people don't have enough time.
More matches can be played!
In matches with highly uneven teams the matches will be less frustrating for
both the teams winning and losing heavily.
At least in my experience, matches are often fairly evenly fought until one
team takes a significant advantage in the second half as concentration slips,
15 minute matches could well lead to more competitive matches.

Against:
This is bound to cause confusion and even conflict when players favor
different match lengths.
It makes match scores meaningless.
Possibly some argument about ratings which don't really strike me as
significant could be applied.
I think adding the capability to have 15 min matches is a great idea. That
way it is possible to play a nice quick match for practice. But I do not
think it should be made into any sort of official match type. First against
is the same as Admir's first two down sides. Another is that there have been
many a match that has had a turnover in the last half of the game. To shorten
the match would affect many outcomes.

Other maps
I am not sure how wide spread it is, but there has been talk of using maps
other than the ducati map for matches. My opinion is that duacti is ducati,
adding in other maps really is not what the league is about. The league is
about mastering one style of map, and playing as well as we can on that
map.
The very young do not always do as they are told, and the very old never listen any way.

I recently played a 3vs3 20 minutes ducati fun match.

We would not have been able to play 3vs3 if we would have to play 30 min.

And, since the team strenth was very different already these 20 minutes feelt long.

So I'm 100% for allowing shorter matches when the team strenth is very different.

I'm not certain about even matches so.

But it's probably ok to leave that up to the teams if they want to play 15 or 30 minutes.

Why should more equal teams not be allowed to play shorter matches?
I don't need huge pictures here.

why should not any two playing teams decide the length of a match (15 or 30min), just as they decide on which server they play? Shorter matches should increase activity, at least the "i have no time" problem should have less impact in refussing a match.

(Pardon the non sequitors)

I know its an odd number, but why not 20 min matches instead?

In my experience, it usually takes 10 minutes to turn the tables in a match. If a team gets a jumpstart on flag running, and you only have 15 mins, say that leaves you only 5 mins, to get back at them. I think 20 mins is a more ideal compromise, if not the best. a 30min match with equal teams is wonderful, and often very short, but a problem with the ducati league and lets not get in to it here, is we have a poor balance of teams.

20 min matches would be best, if the playing field is fairly leveled, you have about 10 min to run the score up, before the opposing team pulls together and defends their flag heavily, thereby running the clock down, or making their comeback.

I'm sure alot of you have seen it, and done it. Played vs a weaker team, and in the first 20 min established your lead. then, for the last 10 min, the match loses its appeal. for me, its because I am respecting the team, and not wanting to run up the score and completely crush the team. But i don't like being killed, so we end up playing team FFA for 10 min, which is rather boring.

I highly advise 20min matches instead.

A question I've found myself unable to come up with a sensible answer to:

How short a match is too short and why?

This can be fixed, if scores are recorded as normalized scores, eg. as ratios, so instead of

Code: Select all

Team A: 6 - Team B: 4
scores could be

Code: Select all

Team A: 6/(6+4)=0.60 - Team B: 4/(6+4)=0.40
Then after 3 matches, the score for Team A could be:

Code: Select all

Team A: 6 - Team B: 4
Team A: 3 - Team C: 4
Team A: 2 - Team D: 1
---------------------------
Team A total: 11
Opponents total: 9

Ratio score for Team A: 11/(11+9)=0.55
Of course there are many ways to construct normalized scores.
For example, scores in a 30 min game could be given a weight of 30 min/30 min=1, 20 min games are given a weight of 30 min/20 min=1.5, and 15 min games are given a weight of 30 min/15 min=2.
Tank you!

There is a slight problem with ratio when one or both teams en up with a score of 0.

Special rules would have to be used in those cases.

For example a 0-0 score could be treated as a 1-1 score, ration-score-wise, and an x-0 score, x>0, could be treated as an x-1 score when calculating the ratio for the winning team.
