me1, I tried your code, it doesn't do anything different.
I'll try getting on the server though.

Thanks all!

Are you getting the same error?
If so, check your map's options settings, and look for the word "test", and make sure everything is in correct syntax.

If you are getting a different error, post it here.

okay. This is what I put in "/applications/BZFlag-2.0.10.app/contents/MacOS/bzfs -conf conf.conf"
and what comes out is the same as my last post with a lot of text.

Then, I go into the appliction, and use the connect command with localhost and port 5154. I took out the public IP address thing, so it shouldn't be public.

Help Me Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what options settings? the config file? :?:

Cheese Man It is NOT giving back the same error. It cannot, because the word "test" is NOT in your config file ANYWHERE. Seeing that you do not know what the "options" object is, it is not a problem with that.

Now, using the config I posted, and changing the -publicaddr to your ip, like joevano said, what EXACTLY is the error?

Like I said, I don't think you should be hosting a server if you can't even figure this much out. Learn how to use your computer and some basic networking concepts first.

If you really must continue, then please, PLEASE, read the documentation and add one configuration option at a time. Test after everything you add. That way, when you break something, you know which option caused it. Using an example configuration file or a configuration file generator will only make your (and indirectly, our) job harder. Please read the bzfs documentation and try stuff yourself.

okay. found the problem. fixed it. Thanks.
now it says "bad argument "{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\cocoartf949\cocoasubrtf350" then the lot of text.

Okay, if it says "bad argument: ANYTHING" then, go check in the config for those words. Also, make sure you aren't hitting extra keys on your keyboard when typing in the bzfs command. If you run from shortcut, make sure there isn't anything extra in there.

the words that come after bad argument? because if it is, then they are not in the config file. they might be in the text that terminal spits out, but i haven't thoroughly checked.

I sure hope this can be fixed. :? :?

Thanks for all your help me1.

Yes. The words that come after "bad argument."

Please, I understand you don't know how to do this very well, but please, please read what I say, it would make things a lot easier for both of us.

I notice you have yim, it'd be easier to do this over im, or, if you know how to, get on irc at #bzflag or #bzflag-chat

Also, it's new years eve.

That 'bad argument' value means that you saved the file as an RTF instead of a plain text file. Really, you need to learn how to use your computer. It really shouldn't be this hard to get a server running, which leads me to believe that you should not be trying it. It's really starting to get annoying.

That is the kind of config people tell you to stay away from as it take the smallest amount of skill to make and you don't learn how to make a server config by yourself, from scratch. It can also be buggy.

That generator doesn't have any real error checking, so people usually make invalid configurations.

the generator that jpenguin posted is also out of date. when poll times were changed to variables, that config builder didn't change. that's what gave me such a hastle when I started my server.

so if you are using that config builder, take out anything in you're config about vote time.

First, it was jpenguin that posted the link. ;)

Second, I just tried generating a configuration from that link, and I got:

Code: Select all

#This is a bzfs configuration file.
#Copy and paste into a simple text file and name it like sample.conf.
#Use it like bzfs -conf sample.conf

#maximum amount of time a player has to vote on a poll in seconds
-poll voteTime=120
Which happens to work fine in both the latest development code (2.99.x) and 2.0.13. So it seems like they updated it. Still, I don't recommend using that because it's too easy to make an invalid configuration, and then you have no idea what is wrong.

They probably just synced it with the one we have in the official source code. They're just using a slightly modified version of that.
