Follow a player in observer mode by lookin' at them.

Post by TheAdventMaster »

Often times I'm roaming freely in BZflag, as an observer, and I want to be able to observe the person I'm looking at, then switch back to another person quickly.

The best way to do this in my opinion, would be to simply hit a hotkey and observe the nearest player (same tracking as if I would be aiming a gm at them). So, can this already be done? Think it'd be a nice feature?

F8 to switch modes, Roaming, Following, Tracking, or Driving With.
F6/7 to switch the 'target'.

As for a hotkey to go back and forth between two players, don't think thats in there.
Games don't make people violent, lag does.

Still no ability to simply "aim" at a player and be observing them.

There isn't a need I think. Very little effort goes into pushing F6/F7 :)

I can't code BZFlag Source. I'd submit a patch without question if I could.

That sounds like the "Tracking" feature to me. Press F8 to find tracking mode, then F7 to cycle through players. You can roam, with the camera always pointed at a tank or team flag.

I think it's not what TheAdventMaster is talking about. Just imagine your roaming around and see a player that you think has an aimbot. There would be one single key to hit and you would be driving with the player you are looking at, no F8 until your in drive through then try to find the name with F6/F7.

Perhaps the Identify/Lock On key would be a good choice...

This shouldn't be too difficult, I wouldn't think.

Fire would likely be a better choice, as identify is actually useful in observer mode.

What does this key accomplish in observer mode? I joined up to a server as an observer, and couldn't figure out what it did.

Nothing, that is why it would be a good candidate for the proposed functionality...

Yes. That's what I was hoping I could suggest ^.^;; Finally got the right idea :D

Wish I knew how to do this kind of thing, but I couldn't even manage to compile BZflag source. Haven't tried on other systems, however.

At the moment it seems to do nothing, but it should identify the target.
