GU League, New Offi Server location?

Post by Grace F »

Hi GU players.

I was wondering if there was anyway we could get another Official map hosted somewhere in California. I ask this because there in California the lag for myself and other Australians is low 200's which is really good. Seeing as how the GU team I'm in now have 4 Australian players and more and more want to join, a server a little closer to home and not to far away from the rest of you GU players seems suitable.

The best we have is Quols which for myself is 280's - 300's and well I've caused my fair share of arguments :) I imagine that it wouldn't be to great for Euro players, but seeing as how Australians and Euros have almost opposite time we don't come into contact much and when we do Quols still remains the best place.

So, can we get another Official map set up in California or somewhere in the nearing states?

Thanks,

Grace.

Odd..I can not believe you'll have 280-300 without having a really bad ISP.

Let's demonstrate this:
Morpheus:~ ts$ traceroute -P ICMP bigpond.com
traceroute to bigpond.com (144.135.18.32), 64 hops max, 60 byte packets
1 vigor.router (192.168.1.1) 1.343 ms 0.445 ms 0.409 ms
2 dslb-088-068-096-001.pools.arcor-ip.net (88.68.96.1) 6.139 ms 6.415 ms 6.219 ms
3 ffm-145-254-1-65.arcor-ip.net (145.254.1.65) 6.363 ms 12.605 ms 6.415 ms
4 ffm-145-254-16-178.arcor-ip.net (145.254.16.178) 6.347 ms 6.107 ms 10.489 ms
5 so-2-0-0.ar2.FRA2.gblx.net (67.17.134.113) 6.412 ms 6.362 ms 7.120 ms
6 te1-2-10G.ar2.SJC2.gblx.net (67.17.109.106) 168.568 ms 167.496 ms 166.982 ms
7 i-1-2.sjc02.net.reach.com (134.159.62.109) 166.916 ms 168.232 ms 166.669 ms
8 i-14-0.sjc-core01.net.reach.com (202.84.251.81) 168.674 ms 168.323 ms 170.911 ms
9 i-13-0.paix-core02.net.reach.com (202.84.143.249) 177.754 ms 178.927 ms 178.240 ms
10 i-4-0.syd-core04.net.reach.com (202.84.144.153) 330.017 ms 330.759 ms 335.909 ms
11 10GigabitEthernet5-0.oxf-core1.Sydney.telstra.net (203.50.13.33) 331.985 ms 339.410 ms 334.425 ms
12 TenGigE0-1-0-0.chw-core2.Sydney.telstra.net (203.50.20.129) 330.886 ms 330.800 ms 331.075 ms
13 TenGigabitEthernet8-1.pit2.Sydney.telstra.net (203.50.20.184) 334.222 ms 334.387 ms 332.806 ms
14 pitt-tcom-r02 (139.130.41.70) 327.467 ms 327.829 ms 327.759 ms
15 144.135.19.84 (144.135.19.84) 331.330 ms 334.913 ms 337.002 ms
16 bigpond.com (144.135.18.32) 343.961 ms 331.145 ms 384.513 ms

You can see the latencies in the first hops (well, my router doesn't really count  ) is really low. During the hops it gets bigger and bigger. However at bigpond.com it's at roughly 340ms. To really measure this one would have to use a large ping series but I don't think it's neccessary to post here..it turned out to be rather like 330ms in the average case.

Same pings need to be sent now to quol's server.
Morpheus:~ ts$ ping -c 100 -q quol.guleague.org
PING quol.guleague.org (69.90.0.146): 56 data bytes

--- quol.guleague.org ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 100 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 122.951/126.237/167.514/5.336 ms

In the end I see about 126ms to quol's server and 330ms to bigpond.com.
330ms - 126ms = 204ms
That's of course not exact - the net is not symmetrical and other factors play a rule but roughly that value should be possible for you.

The client adds some software lag to this so..you should end up with 208ms as australian player.

That's still incredibly laggy compared to bzf for me:
Morpheus:~ ts$ ping -c 100 -q bzf.guleague.org
PING bzf.guleague.org (84.16.249.226): 56 data bytes

--- bzf.guleague.org ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 100 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 6.694/10.121/13.680/1.831 ms

So..yes I understand your concern but keep in mind your lag could be a lot better at quol's server.

Look at your traceroute a bit more carefully, TS. Grace is very much right about Australian lag. PAIX (Palo Alto, CA) to SYD (Sydney, NSW) is close to 160ms constant lag.

Australia is not a small place itself (Sydney to Perth is 4000km or so), so there's no reason another hundred ms or so couldn't be accumulated there.

Neither is North America a small place; another hundred ms can be picked up here easily (for reference, my ping to Quol is 110ms; I'm in California).

I think what you fail to realize is that from Berlin to Montreal is 6000km. The distance from Montreal to Palo Alto is another 3900km. The distance from Palo Alto to Sydney is another 12000km. And the distance from Sydney to a random player in Australia averages around of 2000km.

So your ping to Quol goes over around 6000km. Grace's ping to Quol goes over 18000km, three times the distance. WHY does it surprise you that she has three times your lag?

I thought from Sydney to Adelaide is like 300km..without looking at a map. No wonder I was astonished.

Searching the net for a host in Adelaide I found lns2.Adelaide.netspace.net.au:
Morpheus:~ ts$ traceroute -P ICMP lns2.Adelaide.netspace.net.au
traceroute to lns2.Adelaide.netspace.net.au (203.17.101.88), 64 hops max, 60 byte packets

17 lns2.Adelaide.netspace.net.au (203.17.101.88) 378.464 ms 379.722 ms 378.019 ms

380ms - 126ms = 254ms

After adding a bit software lag, it's at 258ms..and assuming DSL interleaving I'm back at Grace's numbers. Hopefully I'm correct this time. :/

Still we have about 4 servers in europe (2 next door for me) and only one server at North America. Sounds like pretty obvious to ask for more servers outside europe.
