sketch up has no real way to export as a any "real" format. you can only export when you buy the "pro" version.

so no, you can not use the free version to make anything other then files viewable in sketch up

I just figured out I can export it as ".kmz".
I suppose that is no use?

.obj is usable, as the "modeltool" program uses it.
I don't know it's location on the forums, however.
I'm thinking I need a better sig than this...

PETER, you mean those as formats? I believe that .obj files are blender/Wings readable, and can be converted to BZW through the BZ(W?)Tools plugin for blender.

Why not use free software like Wings 3D, Blender, etc?

Good point, but sketchup is easier to use. In my opinion.

Well, go for it, if you think it's worth the price tag.
If it can export as OBJ, you can get the objects into bzflag.

it would be nice to be sure that the *.obj files from sketch will work BEFORE you spend your money on it... try asking someone who already has the full version

an OBJ file is an OBJ file..as interchangeable as TXT or JPEG files. If its different, then they shouldnt be called OBJ.

Well you could download the free trial software from their web site, then you would know BEFORE you buy. And you would be able to see if it is really what you want...

If you're desperate to use Sketchup free to build BZ maps, you could try this:

1) Export from Sketchup Free to .kmz
2) Use this script to import a .kmz file into Blender
http://jmsoler.free.fr/didacticiel/blen ... kmz_en.htm

3) Export from blender as .obj
4) You are then free to use the .obj as you wish in regards to BZ, most likely you would use the Modeltool program to import it into a .bzw file.

I had some erroneous information about that here... but the forum doesnt let me delete my own posts so i had to leave something here. Idunno what that is all about, I thought it said it would export in straight obj format, but maybe not. I think you have to register in that forum to be able to download the exporter, I did not.
Maybe someone wants to at least try it? I think it only exports in a format usable by x-plane.

2nd edit.. here the file is actually downloadable.. but i'm pretty sure it's not gonna do you any good. http://marginal.org.uk/x-planescenery/tools.html
Take a look at my Defender game mode concept.

Thinking is not an automatic process. A man can choose to think or to let his mind stagnate, or he can choose actively to turn against his intelligence, to evade his knowledge, to subvert his reason. If he refuses to think, he courts disaster: he cannot with impunity reject his means of perceiving reality.

Here is how you can use Sketchup for free.
Just follow the link.
http://forums.devshed.com/game-developm ... 19710.html

That no longer works well as the software has closed some loopholes since that older link
