How do you pronounce callsigns?

Post by allejo »

Well i have known the callsign Louman and gnu-sense. But I was wondering how do you think these names are pronounced?

Louman: Is it low-man, loo-man, luman? What do u think?
gnu-sense: Is it nu-sense, gu nu sense, glue no sense? What do u think?

if you have any other weird names that you want to learn how to pronounce post them here.

Louman? is it that hard? its like l-ow!-man, "ow!" as in pain. gnu-sense is like this, gnu is not a word its an acronym, and sense is the only thing you would say. look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU for what GNU is.

Actually it is lew-man (or loo-man if you preffer), it rhymes with pew (as in the seats in a church). He is not Chinese and there is no pain involved...

I've always thought of it as 'loo' man.

As in, rhymes with you, grew, crew, brew, true.

Does it matter how to pronounce nicknames? You type, and doesn't say, it anyway.

Oh, it matters! You better believe it matters! What if I'm talking to my real life friends who play? I'm SO not spelling it out!

I always say LOO-man (rhymes with POO), and as for gnu-sense, it's an obvious pun. It's "GNU" (pronounced NEW, also rhyming with POO) and "sense", or together: "nuisance". I think it's a clever name, really. Oh, right, and I say it G-N-U-sense.

A gnu is a type of wildebeest, and also the operating system, whose logo is a gnu (awkward sentence, I know). It is pronounced like "new" I believe. I don't know where exactly his name came from, but I don't think it's an acronym.

I'm pretty sure its the acronym. if you've talked to him before he seems to know his stuff about linux. but it could be, (wildebeest)gnu-sense.

I've always pronounced it the latter way in my head, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure it would be the short "a" sound...

I'm pretty sure "gnu-sense" is supposed to be a pun on "new-sense" which is supposed to be a pun on "nuisance."

Kinda like how GNOME expands itself to "GNU is Not Unix is Not Unix is Not Unix Image Manipulation Program Tool Kit Networking Object Model Environment". ;-)

Heh I would think the "language spoiling the experience" (now locked) forum was more of an argument than this. :D

I've always said loo-man also, but I pronounced ducati doo-cot-i not cat-i. People always read words unfamiliar to them, sound it out, and then are surprised a while later when someone else says it different.

Lol! Love this post, me1. :-) Had me laughing and getting weird looks cause of it!

And I'm not complaining about what you did with my name... because that is technically correct. :-D True, it is an abbrevation... but hey, it's my name within my name. :-) So I'm not complaining.

P.S. New forum is nice, but wish I could use more than three smileys. I had to remove my googly-eyed one!
