You could use the accelerometer function as movement.
It might (probably) laggy as the speed of a iPod Touch/iPhone isn't the best.

iPhone 3.0 and bzflag 3.0.0? They were meant to be. I can't code, don't ask

The problem with open source :P. This is one situation where I wish the devs could actually make some money off of BZFlag and make maintaining it their job, instead of just a hobby...

Ephraim: I think that's why people can donate money to BZFlag from sourceforge.

Donations from sourceforge currently barely cover the cost of the domain names

To pay a full time developer you'd probably need to net between 60 and 80 thousand dollars a year.

The way I see it, the whole control problem could be fairly easily solved. The accelorometer could be used for steering, while your two thumbs would be free to tap on buttons on the screen for shooting and jumping. Accelerating could be done with another button on the opposite side of the screen, something like this:
-------
| |
------- --------
| | | |
------- -------
(Imagine the lines are even)
The jump and shoot would be on the left so you could shoot and jump with 1 thumb. As for seeing chat and chatting, I guess there could be a small menu button somewhere where you could chat (that could also pop up when you die, under the "Tap to Spawn" message). UnfortunTely, that still does not solve the lack of developer problem (I don't know Objective C Or I would try to do it )

Typed all on an iPod touch.

It took a little time, but I got it to work.

Hopefully i'll put up a tutorial in the coming weeks. You'll need some computer skills, a computer, and a JAILBROKEN ipod or iphone. Note this is NOT for newbies.

Actually, you just SSH'ed to your macbook pro and ran bzadmin from there. When you actually port bzadmin to the iPod Touch, let us know... ;) (And by port, I mean, get it running natively without having to jailbreak it)

Have been able to do that on my phone for years.. not all that difficult... and it doesn't need all that much technical knowledge.

if you call that "running" on an iPhone, then heck, bzflag 3.0 can "run" on an iPhone using the browser to hit web admin, no jailbreaking required.

A phoney screenshot can be easily made with The GIMP, so a photograph of it might be a bit more like proof. Plus, that's not really BZFlag, that's BZAdmin. BZAdmin can be displayed on anything that can run an SSH client, like a PSP, iPod Touch, <insert your device here>.

I'd also enjoy if there would be a simple app to just see who's online and chat..

BZflag is not a chat client or service, we are a game. Use AIM or some other client for chatting...

I know, but chatting is half the game for me. I've been wanting to chat with people I know is in the game (stats.bzflag.org), but since I hadn't got any computer then, I couldn't. That's what I meant... Get it? Like the observer mode, but without showing how the game looks as in the game.. If anything, a map to see where people are. :)

Strip bzflag to the chat and the radar. Is that what you are trying to say?
As far as i know the devs took out fullscreen radar for the purpose that they don't want bzflag to be a 2d game.

If i want to play bzflag on an IPhone i would be a bit disapointent with that.

mrapplecomputer1: Some people don't think that jailbreaking an iPod is legal. (Including Apple, the people who make the iPhone/iPod Touch) That's a problem if everyone has to make their warranty null and void to run it.

EDIT: I know that know one would go to jail for a jailbroken iPod (mine is)

It is perfectly legal for somebody to "jailbreak" an iPhone, it's their property, and their warranty (which they have the option to void). Apple may not like it, but nobody's going to prison because they jailbroke their phone.

There would be no reason to jailbreak go bzflag. The same work has to be done. The sple fact is that the bzflag project just does not want to do it. If some one else wants to do it, morepower to them. I'm not even sure why the subject of jailbreaking needs to be mentioned.

NOTICE::: I am currently working on porting BZAdmin to the iPhone/iPod Touch. This is most definitely a work in progress (as I am doing it in my sparest of my spare time) so I cannot guarantee when it will be available on the app store. (probably not even before the end of the summer)

I hope that resolves the BZAdmin part of this topic (partially) and that it will help admins when finished.
