BBCode enhancement

Post by FiringSquad »

I tried to use the BBCode for SuperScript, but found that it didn't work here.
I wonder if somebody could add it.
Here is a link on how to do it, along with some other useful BBCodes: http://www.phpbb.com/kb/article/adding- ... in-phpbb3/
Please don't add the blink code though, I don't think I could stand it.

Why would we want that? Use MySpace... ;-)

Really.. what would be the benefit? I really see no need.

I'm trying to avoid mods to the forum as much as possible. They make it harder to upgrade. So, no.

There are standard BBCodes that are not yet fully supported in phpBB.
Instead phpBB decided to allow for a standard way to enhance this feature.
Users of this forum probably use other forums too and the slight differences in UI can become a little annoying.

I can understand the desire to use phpBB straight out of the box without any enhancement, but there is already enhancement or every forum would look exactly the same. So long as the enhancements are performed in accordance with guidelines, they should result in little or no difficulty when upgrading. The link I gave was the official standard way of achieving these enhancements.
The idea here is to give users the tools to communicate effectively.
How would you suggest the following be written?
H[sub]2[/sub]O
e=mc[sup]2[/sup]

In my case I wanted to add a small note at the bottom of a post and leave a reference.
e.g. I'm not a fan of MySpace[sup]1[/sup] so I don't think that's an option for me[sup]2[/sup].

Of course, there are other ways to achieve these things, but they are not nearly as clean as adding these BBCode enhancements.
I'm only actually interested in the subscript and superscript BBCodes. Let somebody else argue for the others.

After all, it's a fairly simple mod. What harm can it do?

(1) MySpace is evil!
(2) Your supreme commander.

In addition phpbb3 supports custom BBCodes to be added out of the box and there is no way they could end up causing trouble when upgrading as it's sort of a core feature of phpbb. (I checked with the phpbb3 I run and custom BBCodes work perfeclty without any source modifications or such.)
It's located in the ACP under the "POSTING" tab at the "BBCodes" menue point under "Messages".
As I said, BBCodes you add there are impossible to cause technical trouble as long as you handle them with a little wisdom (like not allowing script bbcodes or similar).
When people demand for advanced math display functions you should at least allow [sup] and [sub] (which are added to the custom BBCodes within 2 minutes), but that's just my oppinion.

While that is interesting, I don't see any need for anything extra at this time.
