Game Survey - Help us Decide BZFlag's Future

Ask not what BZFlag can do for you but what YOU can do for BZFlag! Today, I'm here to present you with a unique opportunity to help shape the direction in which BZFlag will be heading in the future. Let's face it: the most active and skilled players aren't the game developers. So, how do BZFlag developers know what the players want? Truthfully, I don't think we know what y'all want unless you ask for it. So here's your chance to tell us!

We want to get more demographics, information, and feedback from our players. To help the BZFlag development team answer these questions, it is my pleasure to introduce our latest volunteer, Marva Abouei, a professional Product Designer. She approached us and offered her expertise in improving the overall player experience of the game.

Now, you may be thinking: What do *I* get for completing the survey? That's a good question!

• You get the warm fuzzy feeling of helping us improve the game you love
• You will also receive a custom role on the Leagues United Discord server
• MAYBE receive a custom rank on the forums (TBD)
• Stickers! Okay, not yet. You gotta be patient on these, but I would like to have sticker options in the future. However, this requires some research to be done, so it may take a bit of time before this becomes a reality

One potential problem is that such a survey is unlikely to garner the feedback of new players, and therefore it will be hard to learn about how to make it more attractive and to build the community. Is there any way to flag new users in the game so we can welcome them and maybe ask for some (simple) feedback after they play for the first time? (Or, perhaps one can reach out to players of other games and ask them to give BZFlag a chance, and for their feeback as a new player.) I have no recollection of what I found difficult when I started... but could imagine that some things, like certain complexities (or dying while spawning) could have been frustrating.

A bit of a paradox, is what is BZFlag? Since improving BZFlag is on one side of the scale, while on the other hand changes to the game, could make BZFlag no longer BZFlag. (Ironically enough.)

Setting up a system to indicate new users could be done. How reliable is and correct it is another factor. There is relatively few people who can set up system like that with high accuracy out of the small number who can set up such a system. (According to what I'm aware of.)

I should point out I only found it because of Kierra. Perhaps consider a newsletter of some kind? It would be great to reach out to players who have lost touch with the game (myself included).
