Can we have a registered only server using the Apocalypse Map?

Post by ChickenParmer »

Can we make an Apocalypse clone that is for registered only with /vote kick functionality and just call it a different name?

Similar or rather the same question has been asked before.

Outside of the question of the map and name:
  • It wouldn't be popular in the long run. (Settings can make or break a map.)
  • You'd need a whole lot of plug-ins (and permission to use them or someone to make them).
  • I very highly doubt much has changed overall the last time this was covered.(5-7 times or so.)
  • Nobody knows the actual issue you're trying to address. (Language? Cheating? Players remaining idle? Etc...)

Some useful references:
Map editor and tool list (summary)
Prefab and BZW help threads index
Map releases index
Some of my BZFlag related stuff.
BZList.net Modern HTML5 server stats site.

BZFlag has a cycle every 1-3 years. Activity drops/stops and resumes some time after. It returns to 90% of what it was.
We see late in 2013, the following thread: Why are there only like 30 people playing BZFLAG at one time.
Let's say 2014 starts with 30 players:
With a cycle length of:
3 years: 2017=27 players, 2020=24 players...
2.5 years: mid-2016=27 players, 2019=24 players, mid-2021=22 players.
I think the cycles get shorter as time goes along, but the bigger issue is eventually that activity will not be able to sustain itself in the long run, as nobody waits an hour for people to show up.

I wager to guess that the main issue is the number of aliased players who troll players in public & private, and who abuse players verbally in private. Some of these aliased players use multiple ips from vpns.

To say some sort of apoc clone wouldn't be popular remains to be seen.

The tech to deal with this as a problem already exists (even from within the game client).

From the context of the thread, I have seen nothing to indicate otherwise.

There are already match servers which only certain players can use.

Can we have a "match server" limited to registered users? Can we have chat only available for registered users? It can be called Apocalypse 2.0 or Apocalypse match server and be user led with /vote kick functionality and chat only for registered users.

You won't know the popularity of the idea unless you give it a try. We have a dedicated group who frequents Apocalypse who is registered. Let the marketplace of ideas decide.

The idea and premise is different enough.

Outside of plug-ins, permissions and rights: It's possibly a viable option. The main issue is seeding activity. Depending on the coordination and planning, it will be viewed negatively or positively. (Leaning slightly more to a negative side).

The marketplace has been fairly consistent (in my opinion).

This would go against the entire premise and motivation behind the very founding of Planet MoFo so many years ago.
Use the K key to silence players. Simple. Easy. Problem solved.

I can't do EVERYTHING for you. At some point you have to take care of problems yourself.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to dismiss this out-of-hand. But we have been through this multiple times and the decision was made fifteen years ago.

If people keep coming back to it, it's probably an issue that hasn't been resolved. Silencing individual players is fine and good, but what I'm looking for is silencing all anon non registered players. For this players getting out of hand a /vote /kick functionality for the users on the server would be nice. What harm is there in having an alternate server or match server for registered users only?

What I'd like is simple:

1) A registered user server like apocalypse .. Maybe a match one with just registered users

2) A silence all anons option/capability or only registered users to have chat capabilities

3) A /vote /kick capability for everyone to eliminate problems but I think mods want to keep to much power with this one and won't let users ever have this, but I remember those functions from years ago.

I feel like all mods/admins do is maintain the status quo for the most part and if that's your function well done. Nothing changes except anon players becoming more belligerent with time and the only recourse is have you referred to our previous discussions? Have you tried silencing each one individually? Have you tried reaching out to an admin and taking a screen shot of the offending action?

Idk.. Maybe I'm the only one who wants these things, but I feel they're pretty common sense. There's a lot of good players and good energy from many of the long time users. Anons are not among them though.

In conclusion: A server message or help page on how to silence players may be useful.

There is already dialog about silencing with "K"; should that be updated with the "/silence -" command?
The best flag is Stealth.

Something like:

Code: Select all

To silence unregistered:
Enter without quotes: "/silence -"
In addition to the regular server message may work.
