I think the actual tank-model looks better than that rounded one... will 1.12 require better hardware btw?
Saturos ([phagozytose] : www.phago.de)
Patlabor221, that's not quite accurate at the moment.
The treads are tied into all of the quality levels except
low when using the depth buffer, and are disabled
when it is not used. So Saturos, the question still stands,
would you prefer that the animated treads be removed?
On a related topic, it has been found that the mesh
obstacles and related features tend to generate worlds
that have more objects in them, and that they can slow
your machine down. To avoid any possibility of having
users inadvertently entering a world that has a large
number of these mesh objects, they too can be disabled.
... all I need is one dissenting vote with respect to the
existance of the mesh objects (and meshed arcs, cones,
and spheres), and we can merrily revert.

IMo the actual tank-model looks more realistic concerning form. THe new, rounded one looks like a playmobil-toy for little children.
I am not really able to explain it in English, so I will do it in German, maybe one can translate:
Ich hab mir über Google Panzer-Bilder angeguckt und alle haben diese eckige Raupen-Form und nicht dieses komische runde Zeugs, was das neue Panzer-Modell unten hat.
Zum Beispiel: http://www.ospreypublishing.com/osp_img ... s/tank.jpg
Das aktuelle Modell sieht dem viel ähnlicher als das neue. Dabei gehts nicht darum, ob die Räder animiert sind oder nicht, sondern um die äußere Form der Walzen unten.
Hoping that someone is able to say that in english.

I'll take a stab at it:Saturos wrote:Ich hab mir über Google Panzer-Bilder angeguckt und alle haben diese eckige Raupen-Form und nicht dieses komische runde Zeugs, was das neue Panzer-Modell unten hat.

"I have searched/browsed though tank pictures in Google and all of them have the angular caterpillar track form, not this strange round thing which the new tank model has. For example: http://www.ospreypublishing.com/osp_img ... s/tank.jpg
The current model appears much more similar to this than the new model does. At the same time, I am not concerned therefore whether the wheels [and treads] are animated or not, but rather I am concerned about the external form of the lower portion of the tracks. "
What I believe he's getting at is that the tracks look less like a tank and more like a modern (or not so modern) crawler tractor. Tank tracks have uplifts at each end, instead of the half-circle design. Those uplifts are tactical in nature, with a raised smaller sprocket at each end of the track, to angle the treads up to allow rapid climbing over obstacles: rocks, trees, debris, etc.. Saturos would prefer that the treads be shaped like that. The track design in the 1.11 screenshot is more similar in shape to this.
I would agree with him. In fact, more modernized thanks like this shot of a current M1 Abrams demonstrate a slightly longer lifted track portion with a slightly lower angle of the tread, to increase the speed of traversal over obstacles (only in the front, the rear is still a higher angle). Also note that the M1 does not use large sprockets as in the 1.11 screenshot, but rather two rows of small ones. The top ones are just tread carriers. The lower ones are independently suspended to handle rough terrain. Similar design on the Brittish Challenger 2, but they appear to use smaller carrier sprockets on top and larger ones along the bottom. Even the old Patton had this style of tracks, and while the Tiger I used only a single row of large sprockets, note the distrinctive raised front sprocket.
My recommendations would be to use smaller sprockets like this M1, but only the ones at the front/back and the bottom row. Use armor plates to hide the middle upper sprockets and the top tread, similar to the pic above. Animation of the smaller sprockets would take less CPU, you'd have half the tread to animate as well. No modern tanks go to war without the armor over at least part of the treads, and that started in WW1, so no problem with realism there.
Saturos, I hope I got the emphasis you wanted.
