The Shell Shock website will be back

Post by Dutchrai »

I'm back from the asses, and working hard on the next version of Shell Shock. It's gonna be a total revamp. A screenshot of the work in progress will be posted soon.
Looking for some space to host it though, if anyone knows of a good server do let me know :D (able to serve 2000-3000 visitors per month, based on historic info)

Three Flags for the Veteran-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Wannabe-lords in their halls of gloom,
Nine for the Mortal Rookies doomed to die,
One for Tim Riker in his dark room.
In the Land of Sourceforge where the Shadows lie.
One Flag to rule them all, One Flag to find them,
One Flag to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Sourceforge where the Shadows lie.

Content

Post by Dutchrai »

Would have liked to show you a screenshot, but the forum attachments don't work yet. Never mind, you can at least see the new logo burning brightly in its full glory.

Content and sections for Shell Shock at the moment will be:

Map Factory
- dutchrai's maps
- collaborator project
Guides
- lord of the flags
- rookie moves
- veteran stuff
- tips and tricks
Others
- links

Of course, more is coming. Probably will add a system to TMF (The Map Factory... :lol-old: ) so that you guys can upload your own work as well.
Got more 'interactive' ideas, but the practical implementations of those will depend on the supported scripting technologies of the server, and I haven't found a host yet!

If you want a free web host, you might try Free-WebHosts and then do their "Power Search". You can specify what you need in a host, and it will filter the results. The problem with free hosts is that many of them die out.

As a free host, I would recommend Lifeless People. You pay for the plan by posting in the server owner's forum. The bandwidth is pretty liberal by my standards, and it supports php and MySQL.

Will this site contain articles submitted by many users, or just a couple of tutorials written by one person?

Carnage:
One week ago I did not know I was going to relaunch Shell Shock. Are you the one doing http://shellshock.bakadigital.com/?
In any case, don't give up on your work, whatever you have! You may keep any content you have modified/updated from my old site, don't worry. We just take our own routes from there
The more BZ sites, the better...hehe. If your site is named "Shell Shock" though, it might be a good idea to go for a name change, if at all possible. Sorry about any trouble I am causing by re-launching Shell Shock. Contact me if you've got any questions, we surely can work things out.

Workaphobia: Thanks, checking it out. Articles...probably quite a few. Building them up myself at the moment, but if there are any people with good English and writing skills (and experienced in BZflag) I would be more than willing to add more articles. Later though, getting the basic site of the ground first.

Saturos: As for traffic, a bit. 2000-3000 visitors per month in 2003, easily making up for 500-1000MB of data transfer in that time frame. Data storage not much though, just 5-10MB or so, BZflag maps are so small...

Heya Dutchrai! Glad to hear you are reviving Shell Shock. Probably the best BZ user website that has yet to exist. Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

The main Bz website has also been undergoing an overhaul as well. The pace is very slow, though. If you could ever be inticed to migrate some of your efforts towards it, it'd be most welcomed.. :)

Regardless, it's great to hear that you are alive, back on the bz-scene, etc :)
Cheers!

If I can spare the time, no ploblem  Can always have a look!

Had some performance problems with my first prototype for Shell Shock too, had to go for a new design.

Good news: the site will be accessable soon for everyone
Bad news: er...

Okay, maybe I can give you good space. I pay for 200 MB with 7 GB traffic. I am currently hosting my own homepage www.saturos.de [under development] and www.bzflag.de [german bzflag site with >1500 visits per month and traffic around 2 GB]. So there would be enough space+traffic left for you. You can check the speed by visiting http://bzflag.saturos.de
The URL would be xyz.saturos.de (you should then forward your domain to that adress) and 20-30 MB data storage should be possible, too.
