New flag... ?????

Post by BinarySpike »

Ok, another one of my great enhancment ideas...

A custom flag.

Can be defined entirly by server settings.
not your usual /set variables...
But your own /custom variable...

You can change the name, tankspeed it gives, shot speed, or vertical velocity, if you can drive in midair, if you can jump in midair etc. etc. etc.

So when the user picks the flag up the name is displayed and all the settings take place.

Maybe even a shot type (GM, L, SW, or none (normal shots))

I would have modded this but it would require a client mod also

That would be cool. That would also give server owners more ways to have original game play, and players will get to play all sorts of games.

... naturally, the server would only be able to modify settings that a client could recognize. I also imagine that we would want to keep the controls the same. Someone mentioned that Tim Rikers has decided not to include flags that involve using new or other controls (such as right click except for GM lock).

The possibilities of creating super flags are endless  such as cloak and laser together (a rogue could let lose with shots all over the place without fear of hitting themselves 8) ) or GM and Wings (you could call it the Apache Longbow  )

no what Binary Spike means is having custom flags that are set with multiple server variables... so the flag increases the _tankSpeed or _shotSpeed ect. Not Combining flags that are already there.

I think this would be a brilliant idea, that opens up new styles of play for server owners and map makers.

no doubt JeffM2501 will find a way to smash binarySpike's idea into a million pieces :P

Well duh... but all of those quoted are attributes for certain flags. Being able to select and mix those attributes may amount to the same thing as if you had multiple flags.

Heh, Jeff's a cool guy once you get to know him.

Actualy while those are cool ideas those are only server specific things.

I mean simple things...
Tank Speed, shot speeds, bullet types...
not tank states... like Cloaked or Steathed.
that would turn bzflag into a server specific game in no time where every server somebody would have to use the /help command to see what the flag's do...

Oh, and add a file or something for the help message for the custom flag.
-custom _tankAdSpeed 100
-custom _shotType none
-cHelp "Makes the user go really fast but you can't shoot"

Like I said... use a -custom or /custom command so you can put variables in that are the same name as the /set ones (maybe easyer to remember)

Matters on how the devs do it but it would be cool if you could combined to shots together... L and SW...

And I think tank state (CL, ST) should also be defined by the devs...

They know best.
(well, most of the time :P)

actualy his idea is perfectly doable once we change flag effects over from what they are now to just atributes applied to the tanks.

Then server side defined flags would be not a problem.

Sweet! I can't wait to go ahead and start planning the "Invincible" flag, similar to getting a star on Super Mario Bros...

It could be steamroller, plus Rapid Fire, plus High Speed, plus Agility.

...and I would make a time limit for it, as if it were a bad flag.

Am I missing something?

Ah, something I forgot.

You could add if the flag was bad or good.
(so you can drop it or not)

That way you can create a "no movement" flag or a "Geno GM/SW"

I also think Geno is a shot state. like Rappid Fire.

It should be pieced in three groups.
Tank state, Shot State, Shot Type.

That way you could make it become any flag you wanted.

And you could copy other flags but give them the Geno property and so you get a "lucky" flag...

Sheild?
That way if you do get hit you don't die.

It should be pieced in three groups.
Tank state, Shot State, Shot Type.
...and while they are at it, how about getting all the /set varibles broken down into group, something like cosmetic /set changes that only affect the way the server looks, things mainly to do with colors, and dynamic /set changes that affect the way the game plays.

_skyColor
_rainType
_rainPuddleColor

...are all examples of cosmetic changes.

_tankSpeed
_gravity

...are examples of dynamic changes.

Get all likewise varibles grouped, and give them perms so certain groups can change how "pretty" a server is while another group can change how it plays.

and vader, why would you need both high speed and agility?
Games don't make people violent, lag does.
