None here either. But, for some reason I was able to play with 25+ people without people yelling at me for my lag.

AMD did not support SSE until the Athlon XP, so you're one core revision too old. Sorry! :)

DOH! Shoulda thought about that a bit longer before trying it. I read the "and older Athlon chips" part and thought - cool, that's for me.

Slight change btw 17 and 17+

Post by S Magee »

17+ seems slightly smoother than 17 (thought both have a bit of jerkiness/mushiness when the view gets busy), but framerates are about the same on WinXPsp2 on Athlon64 3000 and Geforce 5700 ultra.

With the SSE build I get 21-25 FPS on island hopping. Not much improvment from 17+

will the optimized version run on a celeron 2.66?
Also, what new features does the 2.0.3 have?

edit: why do you need dx7? i though bz uses opengl

A 2.66 celeron should be based on a P4 Northwood. It probably works with the "for P4s and AMD Athalons XPs or better" build.

As to why you need DX7, it is for sound, etc. You can compile bzflag yourself without DirectX as a requirement, instead you would use SDL. Then all you need is SDL.dll. I recommend using the premade compiles though if you have DirectX installed properly, as you will not have to worry about screwing something up as much. (Unless you want to be on the bleeding edge, then build CVS to your heart's content.)

bzflag uses directX for sound yes, but we require DX7 because the binarys we build have joystick support with force feedback, and that was only added in DirectX 7.

You can build with DirectX3 and not get stick support just fine.

the SDL builds on windows are "iffy"

DX7 or better is supported on all 32-bit windows versions except for NT4. If you want to run BZFlag on NT4, you're crazy. Err, scratch that. What I meant to say, was if you want to run BZFlag on NT4 or a machine without DX7, contact us and we will build a version with "old-school" (mmsystem) joystick support. You will still need DX3 for sound support.

Oh! I got a machine that runs windows 2000 -its an HP Pavillion 7955, Pentium 4, 1.50 ghz - which of these newfangled builds am I supposed to be testing on this P.O.S. ?

Anyone got a link on how to compile from source on windows?

Or a thousand bucks I can borrow?

Why do you want to compile it? I'm just curious.

I_Died_Once
the 17+ one

or the P4 SSE one if you are feeling lucky.

bulding on windows can be interesteing. Windows does not come with a compiler.

you can getn and install mingw a free compiler, and there are instructions on how to build using it in the source distroubtions.

We use Visual Stuidio .net 2003 ( VC7.1 ) to build the "real" binarys.

but as AlliedArmour said, why do you need to build. These binarys will work fine for you, and we will make them as needed.

The normal binarys will work fine on 2000, as it supports Direct X just fine.

the ONLY OS versions that did not support Direct X 7 were windows NT 3.5 and 4.0. Even tho XP and 2000 are "built on NT" they do fully support direct X.;

When I build for Windows, it is on Windows 2000 AS (not XP).

If you want to build on windows and are familiar with the linux build process, I recommend MingW with MSYS. Fairly complete instructions can be found in README.MINGW32. If you have trouble, look at the troubleshooting section of that file first; if the answer's not there then come ask on IRC.

ughhhhh

the 17_p4_sse is pissing me off

when i play, sometimes the performance in the game is reduced and there are tiny delays between the tank movement. it's not a huge issue as it dissapears after a while
