I was experimenting with saturn, and I was looking in these forums for an object, then I came accross a wheelbarrow, so I thought of to put saturn in a wheelbarrow :).

I'm not exactly sure I thought of it that was though...

This was so random I had to try it myself!

Sorry if I spoiled anything ;).. Me and my ghetto wheelbarrel

Being the kinda kid that reads alot about astronomy, I believe you can actually pick up, Yes you physically pick it up with your hands, that is if you were big enough...

Cause Saturn is less dense then water, it floats on it... Thats a big bathtub!

Interesting!

Post by Half Track »

Probably easy for you lot who have been making V2 maps for a while but I am trying to make a 'Planet Earth for my map using the earth.png on trepans site.

My problem is that instead of one image of the planet I am getting loads on my sphere.

Can anyone point out what I need to do to apply the inage just once to the sphere?

I know this is probably very simple for those on here with the experience, but I am still learning :)

The relevent bits of the map are below:

material
name planet
addtexture http://trepan.bzflag.bz/planets/earth.png
end

sphere
name example_sphere
matref planet
divisions 10 # number of subdivisions(The more the smoother )
flatshading # flat shading (smooth is default)
position -55.0 0.0 10.0
size 9 9 9
radius 9 # sets all size values to this value
rotation 0.0
shift 0 0 0 # (repeatable)
scale 1 1 1 # (repeatable)
shear 0 0 0 # (repeatable)
#spin angle nx ny nz # (repeatable)
#phydrv example_phydrv # assign a physics driver
smoothbounce # ricochets use normals
end

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

You need to do UV mapping. A 3D modeler, such as Wings3D, is what I recommend for something like that (although some people complain about it's UV interface).

As someone who cut thier teeth using 3DS Max even Blender's UVW tools are are prohibitivly antiquated. Wings has UV tools too?

Well, gsL's UV tools are excellent - have a shot at it, you can get converters back to OBJ I think.

HalfTrack:
'texsize 1 1' would fix your UVs if using a sphere primitive.
I'd also advise you to get rid of the 'flatshading' parameter.

Here's some code that might help:

Code: Select all

textureMatrix
  # for making it spin
  name earth
  shift -0.025 0
end

material
  name earth
  texture http://trepan.bzflag.bz/planets/earth.png
  texmat earth
  specular 0.25 0.25 0.5
  shininess 64
end

define earth
  # visible earth (high triangle count)
  sphere
passable # don't want the physics
    divisions 25
    pos 0 0 0
    size 6.3785 6.3785 6.3569
    matref earth
    texsize 1 1
  end
  # physical earth (lower triangle count)
  sphere
    color 0 0 0 0 # transparent
    divisions 10
    pos 0 0 0
    size 6.3785 6.3785 6.3569
smoothbounce # fake a smooth surface for ricochets
  end
enddef

group earth
  spin 23.45 1 0 0 # tilt it
  shift 0 0 20
end

Thanks Trepan!!

The texsize 1 1 worked a treat!! Also thanks for having the image on your site.

The updated code for the globe is below:

material
name planet
addtexture http://trepan.bzflag.bz/planets/earth.png
end

sphere
name globe
matref planet
texsize 1 1
addtexture http://trepan.bzflag.bz/planets/earth.png
divisions 10 # number of subdivisions(The more the smoother )
#flatshading # flat shading (smooth is default)
position -55.0 0.0 10.0
size 9 9 9
radius 9 # sets all size values to this value
rotation 0.0
shift 0 0 0 # (repeatable)
scale 1 1 1 # (repeatable)
shear 0 0 0 # (repeatable)
#spin angle nx ny nz # (repeatable)
#phydrv example_phydrv # assign a physics driver
smoothbounce # ricochets use normals
end

It is nice to know you can do things simply!

Thanks also to everyone for thier advice, being new to version 2 maps I certainly need all the help I can get.

If I could find the attachment button I would add a picture of the Globe.
Hope to see you all on Trackworld sometime.[/img]

You could spin the texture, that should give the correct idea.

HalfTrack:
The example I provided does spin.
It's also fairly accurate w.r.t. the tilt
and is properly oblongated.

I would probably also use the noradar
and noshadow keywords on one of
the two spheres (which will depend
on your target audience).

Thanks Trepan

I just found your earlier post re spinning worlds, pity I didn't find it a few hours ago! LOL! Still I have got it working now!!

I hope you don't mind me sharing your code again here for the benefit of anybody wanting to do something similar.

texturematrix
name spin
shift -0.02 0
end

sphere
divisions 10
texsize 1 1
radius 20 20 20
shift 0 0 30
spin 23.5 1 0 0
texture http://trepan.bzflag.bz/earth.png
texmat spin
end

You are one cool guy! Thanks.
