BZAnywhere

Post by Saturos »

Hi guys!

BZAnywhere is a linux liveCD I am planning to release soon.
Everybody who doesn't know what a liveCD is just read on. All others can skip the next few lines.
A LiveCD is a CD with a linux on it. The fascinating thing here is: You can put it into almost every PC and it will start a full, working operating system - out of the RAM. That means that you have a functional OS without touching your harddrive. Mainly people do that to test new versions or software without the need to format their harddrive. Others use it to have needed software available whereever they are (one example would be DJs who can boot a system with the necessary music on it, their preferred media-player and the codecs).

Okay. That is where I am jumping in - I created a liveCD that is about BZFlag.

It features:
-BZFlag 2.0.0, 2.0.2, 2.0.4, 1.10.8
-BZWallpapers en masse
-BZFlag-ish KDE (splash, logout, wallpaper, screensaver, icons, etc)
-lots of software like browsers, p2p-progs, mail-programs, multimedia-players, chat-stuff, etc, etc, etc
-blender+teppics im-,exporter
-wings3d +bzw export
-IRC link to #bzflag

I plan to add:
-all important BZFlag-bookmarks in Opera, Firefox, Konqueror
-TeamSpeak
-BZManager

The process will be the following after I released the file: You download a .iso (~650 MB), burn it to a CD, put the CD into every CDROM-drive you can find. The system will boot and you can play BZFlag. In school, at work, at a friend, anywhere. BZAnywhere.

If there are wishes what I should add to the CD, just post them here.
If anybody knows a host where I can upload a 650 MB-file and keep it permanently, please post here.

:)

What is the point of having -BZFlag 2.0.0, 2.0.2, 2.0.4

Why not have 2.0.4 and the latest release from CVS.

Having old 2.x versions makes no sense.

Also you might want to make sure that the livecd has the nvidia and ATI binary drivers on it otherwise bz will have a really slow framerate.

Have you considered hosting it via torrent or emule?

Precisely... some people are still used to 2.0.0 or 2.0.2. So they should have the chance to play with them.
Anyway... having the latest release from CVS doesnt make any sense because I would have to build a new .iso every week.

Hosting via emule or torrent isn't satisfieing for me because if I release a new version of BZAnywhere (for example when 2.0.6 is finished) I have no way to make sure everybody gets the newest .iso.

Edit: ATI/nvidia-drivers are a problem... I think I hurt their license when I include them. I was told by a SLAX-guy that I am not allowed to use them. Maybe I dont care about that in the end... we will see.

Thanks for input!

W00t its SLAX based? Could you also make a BZFlag.mo of 2.0.4? I think they will let you host it on their site if you do.

No, it is not SLAX-based. It is PCLinuxOS-based. It was just a guy from SLAX who told me this (I think what goes for them goes for me too).
And I have really _no_ idea how to make a .mo. :P

Be careful to not put illegal stuff on this.
(I mean... not like it's a problem but companies are more harsh when their programs are released on CD instead of through... p2p...)

Will this CD work on a non-x86 CPU computer?
(I heard linux doesn't work on mac......)

and will it need to be local or can my drive be external? (my local slot-loading disk is messed up and I use my Fantom Drive to do disks...)

1) It is all OSS.

2) I dont know... I think not. But there are ppc-linuxes out there.

3) As long as you can boot from the drive, it should work.

Do you have a working build (or need help? :) )? I would be willing to test, though.

I'm looking at some hosts (I would host it, but I just don't got that sort of bandwidth lying around... hehe, SBC would probably get mad ).

I do, hand it over....

If Saturos/You wants to upload directly I'll sort out an account, and yes it's on a proper connection.

I don't have it, Saturos will have to give it to you. I wish I could, but I just don't got the bandwidth  (maybe in a few years... :o ).

Saturos, have I ever told you that you rule?

It's too bad I'm not in high school anymore, I could have made a lot of use of this. :p
