You don't have to install it.
You can run it after extracting it.

sounds like you are running an rpm based distro and you need the following dependency: library libcurl.so.3.
google search for it.

As the page you linked to says:
Please give feedback to AKAQuinn AT hotmail.com if it doesn't (or does) work.
We do not maintain the Obelisk packages, the Obelisk maintainer does. Note that the download link links to /suparun/ (obelisk used to be called suparun) not /bzflag/.

If you just want to install and play it, check with your distribution's package repository. It's probably in there. Then you'll use a package manager to install it. YUM works for Fedora and Yellow Dog, APT for Debian based distros, Emerge for Gentoo....
It's much easier than compiling from source yourself. (although I do compile it from CVS source, but I get the advantage of having all the new goodies before the official release)

Whatever you do, please don't use the BZFlag build in Debian. Its a bad build and has been the cause of many honest players being accused of cheating.
There are many people here who can post a working .deb if its needed

My Linux is
DSL (Damn Small Linux) . I don't think it's ever been tried to BZ to go onto that.
