Dodging GM

Post by Hoplite »

I've noticed some players are able to do a little dodge and avoid getting hit by the GM. But I haven't been able to figure out how it works. It looks like they just drive back and forth, but I can't seem to do it.

Ideas, anyone?

Hi Hoplite,

Drive full speed in a circular pattern with the GM tank being the centre point (i.e. at 90 degrees to incoming shot). You can slowly tighten the circle until you are very close to the GM tank.

That's basically it. You may not always be able to make a full circle mind you, but you only really need to be driving in the circle pattern just when the shot is close. (I hope I make sense.)

Happy dodging!

same thing... Except do not start in the middle, you'll need to approach him on one side of the wall, when he goes to shoot you, start your turn, and hope, that he fires directly at you, and not in front of you.

or grab stealth

If gmturnradius is set to normal, then you can dodge GM bullets this way, But if the server owner has set it to be more agile...

Good luck.

When you see a GM that's close enough to target you, make sure you're ready to move in the circular path at any time. You don't need to keep driving the entire time - you can stand still up until the point that he fires. As torture2m said, you can slowly spiral in, until you're within the GM's minimum arming range. At that point, the only way for him to kill you is to drop the flag and fire regular bullets.

Doesn't always work either. You know you can "curve" GM around objects?

I like dodging GM's more than getting hit by them. I usually duck behind something, or get hit.

I never make stupid mistakes. Only very, very clever ones.

If the GM turning circle is set tight enough, no amount of dodging or hiding behind objects can save you. Only stealth or luck could be your friend. There was a server running a while back that had it that tight. I got accused once of having a cheat that shot GM through walls because the other player didn't seem to realise that I could shoot freestyle over the wall and then "lock on" the target to cause the GM to turn 180 degrees and hit them on the way back :)

On the note of dodging techniques, I have noticed that combined latency jitter and quick forwards/backwards direction changes can work. But that technique is dancing on the edge of cheating in my opinion.

Just as a follow up, I've tried the tips posted above and have had a pretty good success rate. Problem is, I I'm having so much fun dodging GMs that one of his teammates inevitably shows up and nails me.

Dodging GM, wah!!!
Usually I get shot a few miliseconds after I notice to be locked on.

Dodge a 2 or 3 bullets ordinary shoot, that's O.K (... sometimes...).
But what with 5 or more bullets?..

And ... how to dodge a laser?..

I start a challenge with gm: this evening I got one, locked on a tank, fired, and.... shot myself!
Who else can manage that? 8)

Or, if you also have a laser, shoot the person before he shoots you. Works every time, but isn't easy. Also hope they miss.

if ur using the gm..u can hit targets behind walls and pillars..aim to the side of the blocking object..fire..then aim back on ur prey..lock on him as ur gm passes by, it will curve back and hit him/her. Also..i havent managed to shoot myself, but i have managed to loop it crazily. i was on a platform and it shot under the platform and hit sum guy behind me

i've seen a couple dudes with narrow or tiny or thief
do a back and forth movement at 90 degrees that dodge
a few sometimes...

also if you can spiral tight enough if you get with in
a few units(less then 10?) the GM wont detonate
so you can have a missle hit you and not die....this
is mainly done with wings and coming in over top of him...

also sometimes with narrow you can run/jump at him
by turning sharp from the 90 degree position and dodge
the first 1-2 missles.... you'll probably still die
but you can sometimes take him with you... :)

there is a "_gmActivationTime" variable which is how long untill the bullet becomes deadly, so a gm cant shoot a tank right in front of them.

I was at a server with a huge gm turn and it was so hard to hit ppl (imposssible) because if they moved it would orbit them forever, but it looked sweet!

Not necessarily. Not under the right hands. I'm sure you've played there when I get GM killing sprees.

At mofo, I like to shoot GM is a spray without locking. I know that the clown will usually try to do the circle thing. When you shoot like \|/ ( I really need a screeny for this) without locking, it ensures that they have no were to go when I lock on at the last second. Last second locking seems to turn harder and sharper. This tactic is partly stolen from watching "Wonko the Sane" play.

Because the mofo servers dont have shot limits and large amounts of bullet shots, its very easy to spray GMs. I changed my shot button to be left clicker and the button above the "tab" aka '~' & '`' key. This way when I hold it, it makes a good even spray. Kind of like combining machine gun with GMs.

Now for dodging GMs, the easiest thing for me is to grab some wings (my solution for everything) and do an aerial dive bomb. Fly really high so the GM cant get you, position above them and drop. They cant kill you if you're right in their face. Works everytime.

Rather simple, be moving full speed ahead straight when you fire, locked or not.

This is especially true when you're moving through the teleporters.
