Not sure, I think it's when people send a public message who have just logged on, and the login procedure hasn't quite finished, maybe because they are still waiting for global login confirmation or something else.

Unknown is when somebody gets kicked from the server but a message still remains (if I'm not mistaken). For example, somebody gets autokicked off the server for teamkilling, but one of their shots hits another teamate. They aren't on the server anymore so the teamate was killed by somebody (UNKNOWN).

Like today on CBG's server there would be chat messages from (UNKNOWN).

Ex:

(UNKOWN): hi

i dont think so. i was on city warfare and someone was talking through (unknown). there was no player named unknown but the person who was doing it wouldnt tell me how. so theres got to be a way to talk throught unknown. it might be a modification of /say or /me.

when the name of a person who sent a msg is lost, doesn't the server use (UNKNOWN) for that? like when bob sends a msg but somthing happens so the server doesn't get's bob's name so it just does:

Well, somebody could have joined as rogue and as (UNKNOWN) and started chatting, somebody could have said hi but got kicked of lag or something...I really don't know. Usually somebody gets kicked and that's why it says (UNKNOWN) from what I've seen.

I've only seen it happen when someone has join lag, and they talk before appearing on the list. They rarely get more than one message out before they show up normally.

it seems to me to happen when the client hasn't recieved information that a player has joined, and therefore dosn't know who's talking.... but i dunno. where are the devs when you need em?

It did happen on my server today, and the person said a number of messages, not just one.

Yup.
Messages are sent by a number (slot). If you are an admin at a server, you may have noticed numbers on the score list by each player. Each player is assigned a slot. If a message is recieved with a slot that doesn't match up with any of the client's known players, it displays (UNKNOWN). That is caused when your client recieves messages from a player slot that it dosen't have a player in, usually because it hasn't recieved the player join message yet.

You can't chat as the (UNKNOWN) guy, instead it is an error displayed when a corresponding player can't be found for the ID specified. Packets are lost, sometimes some data doesn't get through to the server, and you end up getting a message from (UNKNOWN).
