Playing on Dialup
Hello, I'm new to the forums. I used to play this game in the late 1990's, but I just got back into it and am trying to get my skills back.
Anyway, I play using a dialup connection, and I have noticed that I often get kicked for "lag". Are there any servers that allow dialup users? If "lag" is a problem I don't want to cause issues on the servers, but I do want to play. Thanks.

I too play with dial-up, and tend to stay away from those that have major issues with 250-280ms lag.
At most servers, I will rejoin once after getting lagkicked, maybe a second time, but if it persists, I respect the server's policies and find somewhere else to play.
Planet Mofo is a group of servers (http://planet-mofo.com Check it out) that I find are very lenient on lag. The typical server setup: 5-10 shot, lots of flags, and a symmetrical map, works very well for both CTF & FFA.

That's a problem for me...most of the maps are in places like North America (Almost oppisite us geographically) so our lag is always from 230 - even sometimes 450!

In my experience, my lag gradually increases to around 500ms until there are 20 people on the server, then it spikes to over 1000ms. My advice: play when the server has few people, and be prepared to either, A: Rejoin until banned, or B: Go find another server.
I should log my lag sometime and find the maximum number of people on a server I can handle with a given amount of lag.

Lucky you. I regularly get over 1000 if I'm not careful. I keep telling myself that giving pppd realtime priority helps my lag.230 - even sometimes 450!

Haha, you foolish dialup mortals...
Me, I have DSL and usually my lag doesent go up over 20 ms.
If the lag spikes over 300 (it does), its probably a computer
hiccup or a server problem... I highly suggest getting off
dialup, but you can play on most servers with no
super-high lag. On dialup, I can get on lasermania, about
10-15 people and, ah, 'bout 300-400ms of lag.
If you stick to smaller servers you oughta be OK.

Your computer has nothing to do with your network speed or latency.G-MAN wrote:Likewise. I think I should get a new GPU or something. I have a 1.5M up but it's alwats like 260 to 300(hiccup.)

EXACTLY: That confused me when I was reading it. "Get a new Graphics Card." But proceeding to say you have 1.5Mbit up and 260 lag. BAH, it isnt normal.A Meteorite wrote:Your computer has nothing to do with your network speed or latency.G-MAN wrote:Likewise. I think I should get a new GPU or something. I find it harder and harder to find servers that are more lenient for lag. As a courtesy I always put something in the email field that indicates I'm on dialup, like "56K'n it". I've found the magic number of players is 8 per server. If there are more than 7 other players I begin to get warnings, of course ymmv, as we have amish shooting birds off our local telephone wires.
Mabie dialup only servers might be something to look into? There are a lot of empty servers out there.
