Quick vote

Post by Valoche »

Many times, when there is a poll, many of the registered players do not vote, simply because
a) they don't know how to do
b) they don't see that a poll is in progress

Suggestion: display the poll on the HUD, and have shortcuts to vote yes / no

Example:
On HUD:
A poll to kick Valoche
has been asked by Gerbil
Press F1 for yes, F2 for no

Of course, there should be a GUI option to disable this feature, since some of us do not want to vote.

Good idea, the option to disable it is sensible, but it should be on by default. :)

I like it, it makes it easier to vote, and polls will go faster as well.
I'm thinking I need a better sig than this...

Although it is possible for a user not to see that a poll is in progress, it is very unlikely. There are four messages sent that indicate that a poll is in progress (poll requested, 45 secs left, 30 secs left, and 15 secs left). An easier way to vote might be a welcome addition, though. I don't know... it seems that it's fairly easy to vote as it is, once you learn how to do it.

That is actually utilized by most multi-player FPS now. I think we should do away with /vote and enhance it, so that there is a setting, that everyone can vote, not just registered players

This is a great idea.

I like it that it dosen't require you to vote, but makes it extra easy.

Often on large servers the poll scrolls up so that you can't finish it in time. Also, many players DO want to vote, but don't know what to do. Also, /vote is a rather long thing to type when you are in the middle of the BoxyWar base with 10 tanks all shooting at you, and you jumping all over the place with CL :)

There should be two quick keys associated with the poll, to give Yes/No. If you do not wish to vote, you just don't press the keys. If people see that the only thing they need to do to vote is push a button, they will probably do it. Even if the don't care much, at least they voted :)

Another problem that is easier to fix is that a certain percentage of registered players need to vote. Many people don't vote because they don't care which way it goes, which makes them much like a 'no' vote in most cases. The voting player percentage could be reduced, or you could use this to make people more likely to vote.

I like the idea.

I think we have all felt that frustration--most of us like sportsmanship and want to help our opponent get rid of a TKer or flag stealer... Yet we've all been in that boat where, just as I am typing "/vote yes"... I take a GM or laser right to the head.

I wish people were more conscious of those polls... It spoils the fun and the spirit of competition for me if I know that my cap or my great shot is the result of someone cheating my enemy out of a chance to play me. I want to pit my best game up against your best game and see who wins, not have you (or me) hamstrung by some other nonsense.

And two more thoughts, admittedly a tiny bit of topic...

1. If you start a poll, then say right away why you are polling, don't wait for 6 people to ask; I won't vote yes unless I know why the person is being kicked or banned. If it's TKs, I can see that on screen. If it's flag stealing, or lolligagging... then I can't and you have to tell me if you want my vote.

2. If you see a poll, and the person being kicked/banned has a score of 0-22 with 9 TKs.... then dont bother asking why there's a poll, it's pretty obvious.

Don't care = abstain = don't vote yes or no, no need for an exta option :P

Better yet... since most kicks/bans are for TKing, show the person's score in the message, as some people have the scoreboard off:
  • A poll to ban xyz (3-21, 11 TKs) has been started by abc...
maybe even incorporate the kick reason in the request?

something like:
  • /poll ban xyz <- would be generic, as is today
/poll tkban xyz <- the msg displayed would say it's for TK and show score
One last thought, it would be nice if you could start a kick/ban poll using the arrow keys in the scoreboard, the same way hunt works, so you don't have to type in the name when TKers come in as hhhhhhhhhhhhhhh or gjgHgfs*542&%@!kw98...

I disagree: Abstain can also be: didn't notice a vote is going on.

OTOH: If the message persists, you can dismiss it with a "don't care" vote.
