BZOgami 2006 Summer/Fall?

Post by ducatiwannabe »

I'm considering doing a summer BZOgami running submission from August 19th-26th and end results would be on September 1st.

For those of you who don't know what BZOgami is you can see stuff about the last one here: http://my.bzflag.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t ... ht=bzogami

However, this time I will not be doing a mix with 2.x and 1.x maps.

I will either do a 1.x only or possibly one 1.x and one 2.x contest.

Does this time look good to everybody? If so I can get to work.

Maybe this might raise the interest level some more. A judge and I have decided to give a $10 prize to amazon.com to the winner of the contest. We can't do this without having at least eight people. Sound good?

We need an e-mail newsletter for stuff like this...

This sounds awesome, I should be back home by then. I'll have plenty of time to finish my program so I can work on this map...

btw I have a question... Can I enter a map with two authors? I have somebody I'm making a map for that has no map skillz at all... so the'll be two authors.

I don't care how you do prize stuff... I intend to rock every bodies socks off, if I can finish it in time, but I know it won't win

I see in the other topic that materials were a requirement? I don't believe this should be so, because materials tend to bog down bz A LOT for me, and most certainly many others.

Other than that, sounds good. :)

that rule was specificlly for people who wanted thier
maps to be considered 2.X style....if you wish to enter
it without materials it would be considered 1.X style and
would still be in the contest....this is becuase people
submitted BOTH styles so we need a way to clarify
what seperates them from each other...

its not a large list either VERY BARE minimum for 2.X style

1 physics driver
2 materials or colors
1 new shape other then pyr or box

I.E ....
you could have 1 jumpy
1 material on 1 box
1 color on 1 box
1 globe or cone or tetra.....etc..etc

this would also show you have a basic grasp of 2.X style
VS the older 1.X...

of course its still up to DW he could remove those
minimum requirements and that would be fine...

i'm pertty much a 1.X man myself...i suck at 2.X
so your not alone if thats what your thinking..

I think, seeing as I won the last contest, that I'll put myself forward as a judge and not enter a map.

Actually, I was planning on this one being a 1.x. You don't have to have textures. I plan to keep it simple.

I might have a 2.x contest as well. Does that sound good to you guys?

Rules on the way.

11:59PM final results will be September 1ST MIDNIGHT. Yes, you can enter past maps. You do not have to create a new one.
It is advised you work on your map before submission dates start. :) You only have a week to submit this time.

2.
I'll take two maps per person/per ip/per email (I will crosscheck
as best I can)

3.
Map size up to 800 units radius

IE....

world
size 800
end

4. total points for a map 45 MAX

SIZE: Stay within max size: 1 is a no 5 is a yes
ORIGINALITY: 1 to 5
PLAYABILITY/CTF BALANCE: 1 to 5
LAG/FPS: 1 to 5
ARTISTIC: 1 to 5
TELE's BOTH SIDES WORK: 1 to 5
DBL BOX/PYR's: 1 to 5
CRASH SERVER: 1 is a YES and 5 is a NO
WEAPONS intrusive: 1 to 5 depending how the weapons are
3 is given if no weapons.

5. A MODIFIED MAP OR MAP PRESENTLY ON SERVER -5 automatically to

6. MAP JUDGE SUBMITS A MAP -5 automatically to score

7. Tell us MAX players and your name or callsign

8. There are a few things to consider on a map

3 hops go thru a tele..

13. Depending on a case by case situation if somone
submits the exact same map as someone else
it will be returned...date of email will be the
first come first served determination.

14. You may now submit a text file explaining
your map or your idea of what you wanted
your map to represent/be/look like...

See something in error? See something you don't like?
See something I missed?

Email to: bzflag DOT email AT gmail DOT com (had to write email like that to prevent you know what)

ALL MAPS come thru the above email address
any maps sent to or through anyone else
will be rejected.

If you any questions feel free to PM or mail me.

Just to clear something up, some people think you have to make a whole brand new map for the contest. This is not so.

For more info or questions pm or mail me.

Also, to see past contests and other great things, go here: http://www.cruzan.info/bzflag/bzflag.html

Winner will recieve a $10 gift card to www.amazon.com, the legendary golden star of map-making, and hostage of the winning map. :)

I am also sponsoring a USB, Desktop, Sound canceling windows and mac compatible microphone worth $14

Note, I will give the winning of the prize a privacy statement for their address... (Just don't be stupid and put it on public internet)

here's some info...
Microphone buyers page

I might take a picture of the one I'll send you... it's un-opened from the ubid place I bought it from.

*edit*
I'm hoping first place winner will either pick the gift card or the microphone and then second place gets the other
I'll talk to DW about it

The BZOgami people will decide how it goes.
*hint to BZOgami people* please let the winner pick his prize and then give the prizes to second, third and so forth */hint*

Just so some people know...this is what I have planned. There have been getting a few complaints about it being an only 1.x contest. I am sorry I did this, but because of some issues with last contest, that's the way to go. However, don't get me wrong, because this is what I have in mind. I am going to do a strictly 2.x contest in a while...though that while may end up being closer to Christmas. What do you guys think of that?

A dozen days until submissions start! Get working on those maps 8)

P.S. When I say strictly 1.x that doesn't mean you can't have spawn zones. Textures and physics and etc. are all 2.x...but I think spawn zones are more of like something you would put in map options. ;)

Wow, now the difference between a 1.x and a 2.x map is being muddled.

What were the issues with 2.x maps?
...because materials tend to bog down bz A LOT for me, and most certainly many others.
That dosen't seem right at all. Just making something a different color besides the default should not affect preformance at all. Maybe it's because the maps that use materials also have more polygons? Check out BoxyWar - is the FPS bad there? Materials are used there.

Making maps 1.x only seems to be a rather odd limitation... how about putting a limit on how many polygons? Or giving us a set of 3 materials (boxwall-like, roof-like, and pyrwall-like) to use? That would also help out a lot in terms of framerate.

The old map making contests were 1.x. Now, this doesn't mean we can't do a 2.x one. That's awesome, time's gone on, we've got to get moving.

Now, I'm trying to make this one like the old ones. I realize people are annoyed with the 1.x thing. I'm also going to do 2.x.

I would like to request the scores for all maps to be posted, If this isn't too much trouble.

I can also give you a URL, such as bzogami.bzfx.net or *.bzfusion.net, if you want.
