Look-around

Post by MacMan92 »

I think that there should be a look-around option, so that by holding a certain key you could glance to either side. This would be useful especially if joystick-twisting is enabled, so that by twisting your joystick you could have a glance at who is next to you.

I believe it's already been ruled out by Tim Riker.

It has been suggested several times already. Tim has said no, the turret faces straight ahead and does not rotate. See this post : http://my.bzflag.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=6383 .

On another note. I wish people would use the search function of the forums to see if their "idea" has been discussed before. We seem to be stuck in a rut the last month or so with "new" ideas that have been posted many, many times in the past.

Being able to move a different direction than what your turret is pointing, while shooting. The idea is that you would be able to move at 90 degrees from the direction your turret is pointing (even if it won't rotate) so you could lay down a row of bullets instead of a column of bullets. This is a very common feature of First Person Shooter (FPS) games, which BZFlag is not (as you probably read in the FAQ :p).

JumpingPat wrote:Thats - to my mind - not what Tech Supports meant :?! The turret should definitely not rotate, because that would change the whole gameplay.

I think it would be great to rotate the viewviewview. If so, one could probably get a better idea of whats around one, without looking on the radar all the time!

Anyhow - new arguments need new discussions, dont they?
^^^ Edit: as I read this again :lol-old:... right, the germans are famous for their endless discussions
You're right. I didn't mean for the turret to rotate, because that would allow someone to back against a wall and move sideways while shooting. I'm saying that, for example, when you twist the joystick, it's kind of like Binoculars except instead of magnification, the view just turns until the handle or POV hat or whatever control is used is released. Just so you could see who is on the side of you instantly, but would still have to turn to shoot at them.

No not at all, there already is a view that you can see to the sides but.... you would need 3 screens to do it just alter the code (somehow) and make it so there is a control for the views.

I love the ideie.

Chickin.

Actually, no. This could be easily implemented (by a cheater or whoever) into the 2.0.x series. But will it happen in an official release? Probably never (which is a good thing, cause this isn't a good idea).

I dont play to much actiongames, but I liked the look-around feature in Gunship!...
What someone likes and what is good can be very different things. You have to remember BZFlag's motto "easy to play, difficult to master."

This sort of feature would place too much power into the newbs and part of what makes BZFlag difficult is to judge 90% of the action surrounding you based on your radar. Plus, it's a gigantic gameplay change and we really need to think about features that really add value to the game - not just because we can sort of thing or cause other games have it. BZFlag is a lot different from other games and always will be. This is what makes BZFlag unique.

Three reasons this is a bad idea:

1. Complexity. Adds another layer to the game, and the people in charge don't want that.

2. Control. How the hell are players supposed to be able to do this without a joystick? Mouse players in particular...

3. Lack of usefulness. This really doesn't give you anything you can't get from your radar, aside from the case of a stealth tank or a no-radar server.

It'd be easy to implement, but why would a cheater bother? it'd be *much* easier to implement the stealth detect cheat instead.

That's very true, but I was just pointing out to ducktape how he was wrong. ;)

I do want to discuss it, but I don't think you understand what sort of features BZFlag should and shouldn't have.

No, it shouldn't be. Maybe for someone like you it is, but that really should not be hard. Inconvenient maybe, hard, no.

JumpingPat, l4's #1 has already been proven by Donny_baker.
#2, That is your job as an advocate of a proposition, such a thing should already have been at very least have first thoughts in text.
#3, I really don't have anything to say to that one.

As for the idea, I really think people should use the 'search' function more to see if the idea has already been recommended.
Games don't make people violent, lag does.

There's still the fact that this is almost completely useless... What does it enable you to do that you can't already do via radar?

Sure, there may be a couple of situations for this, but not enough to make it a good feature, in my opinion.
Optimism is just a milder alternative to denial.
